Sometimes Jack wished he could hand over the reins of Torchwood to someone else. He’d never wanted to be in charge in the first place, always happier following orders than issuing them. Not that he’d followed them slavishly, he’d mostly followed his conscience, but when anything went wrong there’d always been someone above him in the chain of command to take responsibility. Now it was just him.
That was why he’d tried to run Torchwood Three by himself after Alex bequeathed it to him; he hadn’t wanted to be the one ordering other people into danger. But in the end, there’d simply been more work than he could handle. He’d been left with no choice but to recruit a few additional personnel.
Unlike him, his team could die, and some already had. Working for Torchwood had always been dangerous. Still, he’d done his best to protect them, taking on the most dangerous missions alone, dying over and over so that they would live.
But soon the Doctor would come; the century had already turned twice, so it could be any day now. And when he came, Jack would go with him, back to being a follower rather than a leader.
