Buffy wasn’t fond of the old mansion Angel lived in now; it was too big, cold, and draughty. The sun’s warmth never seemed to permeate the thick stone walls, not even in the middle of summer, so the interior always felt chill and damp. It was a far cry from the cosy basement apartment that had been Angel’s previous residence.
Still, he was doing his best to make it more homely. Heavy drapes covered the windows and blocked this smaller side room off from the rest of the cavernous space. He’d put rugs on the floor, built a roaring fire in the grate, piled pillows and covers onto the bed for Buffy’s comfort… She really appreciated that.
The candles and firelight gave the room an almost cosy ambience, if she ignored the moaning of the wind outside, seeping through cracks in the stonework, and rattling the windowpanes. It was really no surprise that people avoided the place, believing it to be haunted.
“Are you warm enough?” Angel asked, handing her a cup of tea. He didn’t need to drink such things himself, so it was sweet that he thought of her needs.
“I’m fine, as long as I’m with you.”
