BtVS Triple Drabble: Acting Out

Summary: Buffy’s parents are worried about her getting into trouble all the time.

Joyce sighed tiredly; she and Hank had just had another fight, and she didn’t want to blame her daughter, but as was so often the case these days, it was about Buffy.
Neither of them knew what to do about their little girl’s sudden and radical change of behaviour. At first Joyce had tried to convince herself it was normal teenage stuff; the staying out late, and skipping school… teenagers were supposed to go through a rebellious phase, weren’t they?
Even good girls were inevitably going to test boundaries as they moved towards adulthood, but whatever was going on with Buffy seemed to be more than youthful mischief. She was getting into fights; several times she’d arrived home with her clothes torn or stained with blood. What had gotten into her?
“It’s our fault,” she’d tried to tell Hank earlier. “She’s acting out because we’re fighting so much.” Their marriage had been on rocky ground for a while now, but they’d been trying to keep it together, work things out, for Buffy’s sake, because teenagers needed stability.
Hank had said they should ground Buffy until she understood that her behaviour was unacceptable, and Joyce had been worried that would just make her more rebellious than ever.
“Perhaps if we just sat her down and talked to her…”
“We already tried that, and it didn’t work. Everything we say just goes in one ear and out the other!”
Buffy had arrived home and walked in on their fight, and Joyce had seen how upset it made her little girl. She’d followed Buffy to her room, tried to talk to her, but it was as if Buffy just shut herself off.
“I’ve got homework to do.”
“Staying together isn’t working, we’re failing as parents,” Joyce told her husband.
Hank nodded. “I know.”
