I just don't have words for how much I loved this episode. Seriously. It's so up there. I just... I JUST CAN'T EVEN. WHEN I SAW IT I WAS 2X08 LEVELS OF UNABLE TO EVEN DEAL WITH HOW MIUCH I SHIPPED IT. I JUST. ARRRGGGGGGHHHHHH.

Yes, this was 2x08 all over again, only this time without the compulsion. Or at least the compulsion from Damon. I saw so many parallels to it.

I'm glad you had a similar reaction to me, based on our conversation after last week's episode...I think we're feeling just what they want us to feel, and the natural progression of this relationship still incorporates, at least for me, all the possible problematic aspects (Elena's suicidal tendencies, Damon's moments of self-sacrifice at the weirdest times)...I just love them so much.

I totally agree with you that this was a clear-cut shoutout to D/E nation that they ARE endgame, and rightfully so at this point. It hasn't really been any doubt in my mind for the past year or so, and Julie Plec has always seemed to have them as her OTP. (I wonder if Kevin Williamson was more pro Elena/Stefan...and he had more control in the earlier seasons, correct? Is he even around any more?)

But you just gave me a HUGE idea for a post I want to write up, I'll be getting to that in a little bit...

From what I know about behind the scenes stuff--this was ALWAYS Julie's baby, but Kevin came onboard to give her power, you know? *They* developed it, *they* sold it to the network, *they* co-anchored the first season. And I think, given the givens of his past show shippiness (Dawson's Creek) he just gave her the right set up to move forward. I'm pretty sure he left at the end of S1 from any real position of power, though he's always had a finger still there, commenting and tweeting when asked. He was more a silent partner, and then at the end of S4, Caroline Dries got promoted to EP, so now it's a two girl-run show.

I've seen the delusions on Tumblr, and it really boggles my mind. I mean, I get it, I have not gotten the ships I wanted on shows, but this is taking it a bit far, for sure.

I went into the SE tag just to see what they are saying, and the only thing they keep harping on is "stunt doubles filmed the DE rain kiss,"

Before I saw any comments about it, I actually wondered about that! I think the Damon stunt double was significantly shorter than Ian or at least the same height as the Elena stunt double because when actual!Damon leaned in to the kiss he suddenly became the same height as either real!Elena or stunt!Elena and in most of the kissing shots you can kind of tell they're the same height whereas Ian is usually significantly taller than Nina. I've got to admit, an annoying neurotic part of me kept noticing on replay and it kept distracting me, haha. I'm assuming they got the stunt doubles because Ian and Nine were super adamant they weren't going to do the rain thing again...?

I cried quite a bit through this episode, and yes, part of it was just seeing their sweet sweet happiness...it's not a small thing to let these two be happy, and more importantly to let them be happy TOGETHER. The scene is total perfection.

She must've felt (considering how she kept asking him to tell her) that there was something happier to that memory than what Damon ended up saying.
Right, because whose favorite memory ends in mud and getting in the car and going home...? Nice try, Damon.

But also, that's where the plot bunny I have was born (yes, I will write some post 6x07 fic), was the kissing. His favorite memory isn't fucking her against a wall. It's kissing her, endlessly on a rainy summer night. WHO CAN RESIST THAT???
