I get that sometimes you just can't help who you ship...
...and so TVD has been painful for a lot of people who ship Stefan/Elena.
But if you don't read E N D G A M E in everything that happened tonight, you are deluding yourself. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just...I think there is subtext, and then there is this:
Maybe it was a little too on the nose, or maybe they just said what everyone really needed to hear, but honestly, all I could hear in the promise that Elena extracted from Damon during their *meteor* shower (Remember 1x02 "The Night of the Comet" when Stefan and Elena had their EPIC night?) was this scene from 2x20:
Only a little over a year passed between the conversation she has with Stefan in 2x20 and the moment Damon remembers in 6x07. In the space of a year everything changed for Elena; who she was, what she wanted (or rather, what she finally ADMITTED she wanted), and the course of her life became something entirely different. It wasn't just that Damon made her love him--which he did, I mean, OH MY GAWD, the scene where he passionately declares WHY he would never erase her is the EPITOME OF WHY ELENA FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM. I mean, that much passion is just irresistible.
And what's important to remember is that her passion is equal to his. She IS just as CRAZY as he is. This has been illustrated from the start, it's just that Elena kept it in check.
And their faces. Seriously. I just. can't. even.
Damon's FUCKING FACE.
I am destroyed by them. I feel like the moment I first started watching this show in August 2010, it was the end of fangirl life as I knew it. I'll never love this way again, because whoever could after these miserable fuckers have destroyed you?
I mean, Elena risking her life to get her memories back is only the most perfect characterization ever, only to be topped by Damon's inherent crazy selflessness when it comes to Elena.
I think the thing that wounded me most was Damon's unwitting carry on of altering Elena's memories. Ugh. STAKE ME NOW.
I'll be back with thoughts about Steroline (!!!!) and Kai-Bonnie-Teddy-Jo, but for now I'm just gonna go wallow and fic and worship at the feet of my OTP.
