Yes, it was. I remember thinking how brutal it was to wait until the last week of January to find out if Elena was okay after finally sleeping with Stefan and discovering Katherine's picture.
It was January 27th or so, I believe.

I thoroughly enjoyed them in this episode. I didn't full-blown ship them until 1x19, though, I think when I went from "hey, they have great chemistry" to "omg, I want them to be a couple on my tv". One of the reasons MMF will always have a special place in my heart.

I sort of shipped them before that, but it was more wishful thinking than anything else (b/c Damon is HOT). I really fell in love with them as a couple when this episode aired though!

And he never tells THE WHOLE TRUTH. Only enough that Elena is satisfied with his half-truth. And then he stops.

That makes me lean toward thinking that they were always planning on having Damon become the romantic hero of the story.
