my first birth

Kimberly was due to be born on December 26th, 1993.  I was working full time at the 7-Eleven store management office as a receptionist, on my feet for much of my day and I was looking forward to taking maternity leave.  My last day of work was Friday December 10th and I hoped that the swelling in my feet would go down before I saw my Ob/Gyn the ( Read more... )

Beautiful Janice :) As much as the experience wasn't ideal in the eyes of a student midwife (;)), it's what will make you a better midwife in the future for having had that experience, you know? You had me squirming with your description of the episiotomy...aye aye aye!

Thank you for sharing this. I'm struck by how similar this is to my own first experience, and to so many of the women I know. I know midwives aren't gods, but it could be so different, if midwifery care was the norm. My experiences with Miriam weren't terrible, just typical (unsupported, lonely, episiotomy, vacuum,...) but they certainly put me on the road to becoming a midwife.
