Let's motor

I have a Jeep Wrangler. I love it, but the gas is killing me, and I'm going to be replacing it with a Mini next year. The thing is, it's really useful for trips to Home Depot, doing yard work, hauling firewood, etc so I don't really want to give it up. But this being Massachusetts, in order to keep it on the road, I've got to insure it. And the ( Read more... )

Can't help with the actual question, but...if you use it that rarely, really only 15 ~15 days a year, would selling the car and getting a Zipcar membership be more cost-effective? They do have some trucks.

(Is it even good for the car to drive it that rarely? We've always tried to get our mostly-resting cars out at least once a week or so, but maybe that's superstition...?)

I second the rental option for a vehicle you rarely drive. Even if it costs you $40/shot, if you only use it 10 times a year, you've saved $800 on insurance alone, never mind registration fees/etc.

Thirded. Rentals (I like Enterprise, never had a bad experience with them) or Zipcar.

Zipcar's $50 a year if you only use it occasionally, and about $10/hr for their trucks. It'd be way cheaper than $1200/yr for insuring that one.

Every time I look into Zipcar, it seems pricy, especially for a second car. Plus, I'm in the burbs, and it would be a major pain to drive to a Zipcar location and back when I need one.

It is true that its good to take cars out once in a while, but with modern cars, Its more like a few times a year, not a few times a month. And use synthetic oil.

I only get 10% off for low mileage with my insurer; I'd never heard of 15% before today. I doubt you'll do better than that.

:nodding: We got 10% off our Liberty this year because we're no longer using it as our primary vehicle.

You should look into registering it as like a farm vehicle or something. I don't know if you can do it in Massachusetts, but in some states if it is only used around your property you don't need to register it, or the insurance is different...or something. I don't realy know much about it, but I know that in some states there is something that can be done.

Home Depot rents trucks and vans very cheaply. Much more cost effective.
