Cutest Dog Ever needs to go to the vet for annual tests (heartworm etc.). I have also scheduled a teeth cleaning for him. Do you know how much it costs to clean the teeth of a 30-pound dog? It's going to cost us $190 for the cleaning, and then there will be other charges for the tests. Whoa. I don't even want to know how much the teeth would ( Read more... )

For us urban 'dinks', a dog has become a sort of surrogate child, I believe. All of that parental instinct has to be directed somewhere, I guess--and what better way than with a 30 lb. scavenging mammal? :)

We did this a lot more before the kids came along. Now kitty's lucky to get her shots regularly.

I do think the food thing it a little excessive. I mean, dogs are creatures that have basically lived off our refuse for many thousands of years. Why do they now, suddenly, have to have some precise balance of nutrients to be healthy?

I think the weirdest pet pamperers are ones that never go anywhere without the pet. You see them in the car, and this big black lab has his head between the driver's eyes and the road, but they act like it's no big deal, it's okay for the dog to interfere with your driving. I wonder what they do when the go to work? Let him type?

I actually don't mind so much going for the better quality food, if it means less hassle for me later on. The dog stays healthier and doesn't stink when he has good nutrition, so that's a good trade-off for me. Less trouble down the line. Hey, they may be scavengers, but so were humans once, and now we know better. We can survive without proper nutrients, just not as long and not as well ( ... )
