After the strange weekend Ellie had, she had been more than happy when Devon suggested they have some time alone together. It just made things really feel like normal again, and that was very much something she needed. They had put together a pretty good meal, to, to the point she was considering maybe making one of the side dishes they had in bulk for the party the next day. It was an idea, and one of many she had.
"Do you think we could find a bamboo stick long enough for that? Thank you, by the way," she said, pausing in the conversation long enough to take a sip. It tasted good enough that she actually looked down at the glass once she swallowed. "Oh, wow. This is actually pretty good. Where'd you get it?"
He hadn't had to go through so much trouble for a simple dinner, and her smile hopefully conveyed that she appreciated the effort. She knew it wasn't too easy to hunt down alcohol around the island.
"Tie a couple together," Devon said with the kind of confident nod that meant he believed it could work, even if he hadn't actually tried it. Which he was totally going to do.
He gave Ellie a little pleased smile for the wine. "Tosh, nice lady who helps run the Hub. Told her I needed something for dinner with my favorite girl in the world," which Devon absolutely meant, "and she gave it to me."
They'd been together for a while, but she didn't really think she'd ever get tired getting compliments from him. It probably helped there were moments a few months ago that she thought she lost him for good because she was on the island and he wasn't. It put a lot in perspective.
"I'll have to thank her," she mused after taking another small sip. "And thank you for tonight. It was really sweet of you to set this up."
She might've helped with the cooking, but he went beyond even what she had been expecting for the night.
"You're welcome," Devon said as he leaned over and gave Ellie a kiss. When he pulled back, he sat up a little straighter. It was now or never. Showtime. Devon just wished there were less nerves involved.
...maybe after he took a second to get his breathing straight.
