Perna watched Carson walk over to one of the isolation rooms, as she was about to get some tea.

He'd looked troubled all afternoon, but she hadn't had the chance to catch him alone. She'd witnessed the scene between him and Rodney. She'd been sitting at a desk, across the room, at the other side of the infirmary, and just looked up as up as Rodney angrily stomped off.

"Carson," she addressed him, reaching for his elbow as he was about to open the door. "Are you alright?"

Carson hadn't noticed Perna until she gently touched his elbow and said his name. The touch surprised him, but not enough to jump. Turning to look at her, he thought about her question and if he should tell the truth. He knew nobody liked a whiner and he felt like he'd become one. Still... he was a horrible liar.

"No, I'm not but I don't want to burden you. I've made my bed and now I have to lay in it," he said, voice full of regret.

"You're not putting a burden on my shoulders by telling me what bothers you," Perna said with a kind smile. "I care for you, and it bothers me to see you worried. If I am overstepping boundaries and this is something private you rather not share, I can understand." They hadn't spend much time since they arrived on Atlantis, and Perna didn't know how she could tell him that this was something she'd like to remedy. She knew that Carson had other obligations, especially with his lover. And she certainly didn't want to get between them.

Carson gave her a warm smile. She was a friend even though they hadn't spent much time together. Looking at her kind expression, he remembered what Rodney had said about her or what he had implied. Carson knew Rodney would most likely be mad at him for sharing things with her but she was his friend and he wasn't going to change that. Friends were important and he most likely lost two of them today.

He didn't want people to know more then they already did so he suggested, "Let's go into an exam room, for some privacy. I didn't get much of that today and I know things are floating around."

Perna nodded at his explanation. She was fully aware that there always was gossip, and that there always were people who spread it. She just didn't get why people were willing to participate in it, when they had to be aware that other people could get hurt by it. People like Carson, who certainly never hurt someone willingly. She followed him to the examination room and waited until he'd closed the door ( ... )
