This is believe it or not something I ran right up against in doing a batch of self-examination, that crap; I found that I tended to be pessimistic, not just because things looked bleak, but because childhood was a lot of gaslighting. You know, things are great, you must be happy, you must be optimistic, optimism is the sign of a good person, all these judgments. I found that all of that made me cling a little to pessimism as an internal assertion of self.

It doesn't help that my mother's very big into Eastern and yoga teachings, and claims that optimism and pessimism attracts good and bad fates DIRECTLY to yourself.

Fighting colitis for so many years, I had plenty of seriously pessimistic moments, and the occasional spike of optimism. But it was the surgery, not the damned optimism, that eventually put it into permanent remission.
