Snape watched the way Harry was so careful with the scared little kitten. "Hold her against your chest so she can hear your heart beat, it will help calm her," he quietly, sitting on the couch near Harry's head, seemingly unable to stop himself burying his fingers in Harry's hair as the boy stroked the cat.

Harry looked up at Snape even as he felt the fingers begin to card through his hair. He complied bringing the tiny kitten up to his chest, leaning backwards so the postition wasn't as odd. He wanted to ask how Snape knew what to do, but decided against it. The tabby kitten stopped shaking after a long moment and Harry relaxed further agains the couch.

"We still need to name her," Harry murmured.

Snape watched as the cats shivers slowly dwindle away until he was like a limp cat on Harry's chest. "How would you feel about naming her Persephone?" Snape said, running a long, slim, finger down the kitten's back.

"She brought changes in the seasons right?" Harry asked, vainly trying to remember what he learned in formative schooling. He had the overwhelming need to hold the kitten possessively as Snape petted her, but didn't act on the impulse. It wasn't only his kitten after all.

Snape had seen Harry's shoulders tense up, so he backed away, removing his hand from the kitten. Snape knew that this was the first thing in Harry's life that was truly his, and nothing and no one would ever try to take it away from him. Snape could allow some leeway in his possessiveness, as long as it didn't become unhealthy somehow.

He sat back against the couch, but left his fingers carding soothingly through Harry's hair, feeling him relax again. "Yes, she represents change and new times, much like this. Our little family is growing," he said softly, smiling.
