Jack had gone wandering. It had been long enough since he had found Ianto and he hadn't disappeared or died on him yet, so Jack was getting a little more adventurous with wandering off on his own and leaving Ianto alone. Granted, he still watched over him like a hawk, and he wasn't sure that it wasn't too good to be true to have him back, but Ianto'd convinced him to give him a little breathing space, and so he was.

Soon enough he found himself in the oxygen gardens. He didn't really have a problem with a lack of flora - he'd grown up on a desert planet and then gone on to join the Academy and live on a space colony for a while after that, so he was sort of used to it. But he could appreciate plant life nonetheless, and so he smiled softly as he walked the lines of plants. Which was when he heard talking and stumbled on a young, blond woman who seemed to be right at home where she was.

"Well. Someone's got a green thumb," he remarked, idly.

Applejack paused when she was interrupted, looking up from her work around the ferns with a blink before smiling sheepishly. It was kind of hard getting used to the idea that nobody was a pony on board this ship, and she nodded, making a small humming noise in the back of her throat as she placed her hands on her hind legs...no, they were thighs or something, right?

"Well, mah family owns an apple farm back home so Ah figured Ah'd lend a hoof t' this here garden. Looks like it ain't been cared for much," she said in response, accent showing in her speech. "Ain't like there's much else t'do 'round here in th' way of farmin'."

[ooc: I'm cool with either]

Jack raised a bit of an eyebrow at the mention of raising a 'hoof', but let it slide for then. More amused and curious about it than anything else, really. "Yeah, well," he said, sticking his hands in his pockets and rocking on his feet slightly, "we're lucky that we've got even this much. Not every ship of this class gets its own oxygen gardens, after all. The plants probably thank you, though. Like you said, doesn't look like anyone's been caring for them for a while yet."

[ooc: roger that!]

"Well now, 't ain't like apple buckin' but Ah'm still a farmer. Can't stand to see nothin' given some li'l TLC for a while." She stood from her crouch, wobbling for a minute as she tried to find her balance. She'd mostly been crawling around on her hands and knees before Rarity and Big Mac had helped her learn how to walk. It had been a little embarrassing, and she didn't know why. She stuck a dirt-covered hoof...hand out. "Ah'm Applejack. Pleasure t'meetcha."

Bella had learned some time ago that she didn't generally mind weeding. In a way, it was therapeutic, if often unnecessary in the Arizona heat. Cactus gardens didn't need the kind of upkeep gardens that were actually meant to grow and prosper did, such as in Washington. Then again, Charlie didn't so much have a garden as the attempts of one her mother had started years ago ( ... )

Applejack paused as she went to go back to her gardening, getting the odd feeling that she was being watched. When she turned her head to look over her shoulder, she caught sight of Bella flailing and stood from her crouched position, going to help her before her balance failed on her for the third time that evening, making her fall flat on her face.

With a small grunt, she lifted herself up, sitting on her knees as she rubbed at her head underneath the cowboy hat sitting on top of it. "Are y'all a'ight?" she asked, more concerned about the well being of the other person than her own.

One day the ponies turned human would have better luck walking than Bella did, despite being human all her life. Bella gathered herself up, pushing back so she rested on her knees and the balls of her feet. "I'm fine," she said, putting on enough of a smile to pass muster as okay. "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going, that's all."

Not that she would have been less likely to trip if she had, but the fiction felt kinder. "I didn't mean to interrupt. Are you okay?" She was concerned that she'd inadvertently surprised the other girl, and ended up causing her harm. Being clumsy on her own was one thing. Getting others into trouble for it? Quite another.

"Ah'm fine. Still ain't used t' walkin' on two hooves af'er all." Applejack brushed her jumpsuit off before attempting to stand again, wobbling a little bit and giving a triumphant grin when she found her balance. To her that was an achievement in its own merit.

After testing her feet, she looked up at the human girl, holding a dirty-covered hand out. "Y'all didn' in'errupt me either. Name's Applejack."

[Jade was still getting used to being around people on a consistent basis. All but one of her friends were missing, and the others she did find from back home were less than desirable. The strangers surrounding her were another story altogether. Out of habit, much of her time here had been spent alone - exploring the ship, figuring out where things were and how to get there if needed.

The Oxygen Garden was a pleasant surprise to stumble onto. Jade strolls through it slowly, taking time to properly admire the flora. Hearing the voice of another, she stops to listen before approaching.]

You gave them names?

[Applejack blinked when the new voice interrupted her train of thought, turning her head to look over her shoulder at the new girl. It was still tricky not being able to turn it on an almost 160 degree angle, but she was learning to deal with it since hands were much better than attempting to use her hooves.]

Sure did! Y'know, talkin' t' plants helps 'em grow. Sometimes Ah sing t' 'em too, an' a li'l story tellin' never went astray.

Oh, I know! I used to play bass for my plants back home. I'm no good at singing, though.

[Finally, someone who appreciates flora as much as she does!]

What kind of stories do you tell them?

[ Since the Captain had sent her with a binder full of notes and an escort to the oxygen garden, Corazon had spent essentially every waking moment there, trying to get it into a more functional, tidied state, become acquainted to any new features, though much of it seemed very similar to the garden she tended aboard the Icarus II.

She had just been in the process of transferring some ferns to one of the overgrown beds into the one she'd been trying to weed out when an accented voice floated up from one of the other corners of the room. Fern still in hand, she wandered over, peering over from behind one of the widely overgrown bushes at the girl. ]

Are you... speaking to someone?

[Applejack blinked a bit when she heard someone else's voice, turning around on her hands and knees to face Corazon. Since the incident with Bella, she'd learned that turning around was probably going to get her a face full of dirt. She gave the woman a smile, wiping a bit of sweat away from her forehead and smearing a little more dirt on her in the process.]

Sure as sugar are. Sometimes plants need a li'l talkin' to t' help 'em grow.

[ Cory gave a smile and a small laugh. There was something very endearing about this girl, shared interests aside. The optimistic glow was a comfort to be around, especially in a situation such as theirs. She pulled a handkerchief from her pocket to offer it to the girl, tapping one finger to her own forehead to indicate Applejack may want to take a wipe at hers. ]

Of course. A healthy dose of nurturing is required for growth in any form. [ She kneels next to her, watching the plants. She points to another one, farther back. Smaller, just a sapling. ] And what's this one's name?

[Applejack took the cloth from the human woman, blinking a bit before she got the gist of what she was trying to say. Wiping her face with the handkerchief, she paused, glancing towards the sapling with a small smile.]

Apple Bloom. Af'er mah sister.

The Exile has been spending most of his days wandering the ship and trying to get a feel for things around it. It hasn't entirely worked out, but he did find the Oxygen Garden with little trouble. He's been spending the better part of the last few days coming here; it's peaceful enough and he always has liked plants. This is the sort of place he might have been sent to work, if becoming a Jedi hadn't worked out. Those with the Force had a natural knack for tending to plants.

He doesn't have the Force here, though. Without his companions he's powerless, but he can't say that he minds. He worries for the welfare of his galaxy, true, but being deafened to the Force again means life has gotten that much simpler... and safer. For everyone. And he's still good with plants.

Though this time, he ends up following someone's voice to an area he hasn't frequented in the Garden yet. "Ah, hello? Sorry if I'm disturbing you; I didn't know anyone else was here."

Applejack wiped a little bit of sweat away from her forehead with the back of her hand before she turns to look at the person. So many people venturing into the gardens today, it's actually nice to speak to some of them. Interesting to. She gives him a smile.

"Aw, it's okay, sugarcube. Ah was jus' finishin' up."
