Jack had gone wandering. It had been long enough since he had found Ianto and he hadn't disappeared or died on him yet, so Jack was getting a little more adventurous with wandering off on his own and leaving Ianto alone. Granted, he still watched over him like a hawk, and he wasn't sure that it wasn't too good to be true to have him back, but Ianto'd convinced him to give him a little breathing space, and so he was.

Soon enough he found himself in the oxygen gardens. He didn't really have a problem with a lack of flora - he'd grown up on a desert planet and then gone on to join the Academy and live on a space colony for a while after that, so he was sort of used to it. But he could appreciate plant life nonetheless, and so he smiled softly as he walked the lines of plants. Which was when he heard talking and stumbled on a young, blond woman who seemed to be right at home where she was.

"Well. Someone's got a green thumb," he remarked, idly.

Applejack paused when she was interrupted, looking up from her work around the ferns with a blink before smiling sheepishly. It was kind of hard getting used to the idea that nobody was a pony on board this ship, and she nodded, making a small humming noise in the back of her throat as she placed her hands on her hind legs...no, they were thighs or something, right?

"Well, mah family owns an apple farm back home so Ah figured Ah'd lend a hoof t' this here garden. Looks like it ain't been cared for much," she said in response, accent showing in her speech. "Ain't like there's much else t'do 'round here in th' way of farmin'."

[ooc: I'm cool with either]

Jack raised a bit of an eyebrow at the mention of raising a 'hoof', but let it slide for then. More amused and curious about it than anything else, really. "Yeah, well," he said, sticking his hands in his pockets and rocking on his feet slightly, "we're lucky that we've got even this much. Not every ship of this class gets its own oxygen gardens, after all. The plants probably thank you, though. Like you said, doesn't look like anyone's been caring for them for a while yet."

[ooc: roger that!]

"Well now, 't ain't like apple buckin' but Ah'm still a farmer. Can't stand to see nothin' given some li'l TLC for a while." She stood from her crouch, wobbling for a minute as she tried to find her balance. She'd mostly been crawling around on her hands and knees before Rarity and Big Mac had helped her learn how to walk. It had been a little embarrassing, and she didn't know why. She stuck a dirt-covered hoof...hand out. "Ah'm Applejack. Pleasure t'meetcha."

Jack reached out to shake her hand, without hesitation to whatever dirt she might have had on it, as much to shake her hand as to secretly make sure she was steady on her feet. She looked a little precarious there for a moment. "Captain Jack Harkness," he said in return, laying on the charm with the big matinee idol smile that he offered her as well. "It's a pleasure to meet you too."

Applejack knew a charmer when she heard one, having once been living the high life in Manehattan society. But she'd been a little filly back then, and even though she didn't understand it she still saw the same things when she attended the Grand Galloping Gala. She let a small smirk form across her face, tilting her head in a small greeting gesture. "How're y'all gettin' used t' this here ship thingy?"

Jack shrugs, smiling all the while. "I'm fairly used to it. But then again, I come from a time when this sort of thing was pretty commonplace, so it's not that big of a step for me. What about you? How are you doing, being uprooted and placed on the Tranquility here?" he asks, cocking his head to the side a little to show that he is interested in whatever answer she gives him.

She tucks her arms behind her back, finding them a bit better when placed there as opposing to dangling at her sides. It felt weird for her front hooves to not be on the ground. "Well Ah been gettin' used t' bein' hewman so far. 'Least Ah got mah big brother an' one o' mah best friends're helpin' me with that." Applejack pauses a bit, deciding to explain. "We used t' be a ponies 'fore we were dragged here."

Okay. Jack supposes that if he talked to a man earlier who claimed that he used to be a ship before he got to this place, then ponies is at least a little easier to digest. After all, at least ponies are living, breathing, sentient creatures. It still takes him a moment to process that, though. "...ponies," he says. "I thought... I thought you said that you worked on a farm with the plants..."

People seemed to be taking the fact that there were human turned ponies on the ship with mixed results. Applejack had met a few people who had been a bit surprised, so she brushed off Jack's small bit of apprehension. "Plants're just one o' th' things we grow on Sweet Apple Acres. Ponies're vegetarian after all, an' we use flowers in our bakin' sometimes."

Jack smiled, shaking his head, bemused at the situation more than anything else. "Obviously, if you're talking about baking and owning business, what you're defining as a pony and what I'm defining as a pony are two completely different ideas. Regardless, though," he said, with a shrug, "how d'you like being a human so far, then?"
