Bambi was my first. Not the Disney movie. :) And the original Peter Pan was my second, but I probably don't have to mention that one.

How old is she, exactly? She sounds precocious enough for Encyclopedia Brown, even if he's aimed at kids a few years older. Loathe though I am to suggest it, perhaps the Lemony Snicket books?

I loved the Oz books as a kid! My mother had all of the ones by Baum and some of the ones by other authors.

For other fandoms, "My Neighbor Totoro" is a long-time favorite of mine. Of the two young girls, Mei might be around the same age as your kidlet. It does deal with a sick mother though, so I'm not sure how that would go over for a young kid. (The 1994 release by Fox has a better dub than the 2006 Disney release in my opinion, but that could be the bias of nostalgia.)

Also! Fraggle Rock is the best thing ever. Tons of songs in every episode, colorful awesome characters, catchy intro song, fanciful and imaginative, I could gush about Fraggle Rock for hours.

actually Auntie Em and Uncle Henry end up in Oz too. It might be "Return to Oz"? I read and reread the entire original series as a Young Delle - and highly recommend them when she gets a little older.

Actually, Return to Oz is only the name of the Disney movie, not of any of the actual books. :-) The one you're thinking of is The Emerald City of Oz.

Second the recommendation, though, enthusiastically! :-) And Baum's non-Oz fantasies as well (I can give you a list of which ones should be read before The Road to Oz so she'll know who all of Ozma's birthday guests are *g*).
