gingicat: Luring children into fandom
Well, I had various elaborate plans for doing this for when Hypatia got older, including watching various fannish sources together and making up stories, playing computer games and doing mods (initially for her, then later showing her how to do her own). However, based on my current evidence, this is not going to be necessary. She is already a fan.
The current fandom is The Wizard of Oz. We read the book in tiny bits and pieces and then watched the movie in ~15 minute increments, fast-forwarding past the Wicked Witch.
Since then, I have sung "We're Off To See The Wizard" at least three times a day for every day of the last month, and have LARPed alternately the Scarecrow ("Mommy, can you ask to go" "OK: Dorothy, do you think the Wizard would give me some brains?" "Yes I do Scarecrow!" "Well, let's go!" *break into united song and go skipping through apartment*), the Tin Woodman ("You need to be oiled, Tin Woodman!" "Mmmphmpmphr!" *Hypatia applies toy teapot in lieu of oilcan*), and Auntie Em ("Dorothy! I'm so glad you're home! Where were you?" "I was in Oz!").
Hypatia prefers the roles of Dorothy and Glinda. She has repurposed a random plush handbag someone gave her as her basket and a small stuffed Pluto is Toto. She likes to cosplay in a small blue dress and is often sad if it is in the wash. Also she is already making up fanfic: she decided that Auntie Em and Uncle Henry should get to visit the Wizard with Dorothy. I may possibly have given excessive fuel to the fire by getting her a pair of sparkly red shoes which she now insists on wearing ALL THE TIME.
For the sake of my sanity, I would appreciate any recommendations for other toddler-appropriate fandoms to pimp her into if any of you have ideas!
