It's possible, but if the characters in a fic could really be changed like that, the characterization would be really sterotypical? And in a fic with good characterization, the characters would seem really off in another world.
Just saying.

omg, you with your sensible criticism and your bunnies in teacups. *g*

of course the real practical reason would be the camouflage, and generally you'd know what the author meant and use that, or else it would be just as silly fun, but actually more seriously, I do think there are certain fannish tropes -- we fall in love with the same thing over again, and like to do the same story in a million different ways, so it could actually be fun to try and write a story that works seriously for different characters who happen to fall along certain similar lines. Like, basically a variant on AU RPF stories -- let the reader cast whoever she wants to see, almost, within some broad bounds.
