New layout: modified refried paper

Jan 23, 2007 10:56

I've modified the Refried Paper S2 layout, and thought I would share it in case anyone would like to use it also. You can see what it looks like at my journal, with the colors and a customized title banner added. It's pretty much the same look as refried paper, and just fixes a few omissions I found annoying about the style.

I don't know a thing about coding, but resizing pictures is usually really easy - so if it turns out that the pic does have to be the same size, I'd be happy to resize it for you!

Maybe a bunch of icons in a row? That should be about the right size, I think. Or maybe just a smaller picture with a black or white (or whatever) border?

This is gorgeous. However, when I try to go to Custom Options, I get

Journal Display
Layer belongs to another user. vs 1402780

Does this mean that I need to create a copy of your layer?

Never mind. The second time I tried it, it worked.

If I understand correctly, the "layer belongs to another user" thing happens if you try and save your layer at the same time as another user on the site does.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I've adopted it, and am so much happier with the look and feel of my lj now!

I've been meaning to do a journal revamp and yours looks great. Now I won't feel so sick to my stomach at the thought of fighting code again. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, I have a follow-up question: do you know if there's a hack to get rid of the username floating on top of the header image? I didn't take that into consideration when I made my header tonight, and I don't want to have to compensate for it. (My typography is way prettier.)

Thanks v. much in advance.

The reason I didn't take out the floating title text is that what happens is you end up with your own header on any page you apply ?style=mine to. If you use the floating text, and just sort of create a white space beneath (eg, see my header image), the text will change appropriately to reflect the title of whatever journal you are viewing -- less pretty but a lot more usable, was my feeling.

If it helps, you *can* set the font to whatever font you personally enjoy and have installed on your system, so that at least you see the nice font even if others who don't have it end up with the fallback font if they look at your lj.

Ah, but I like that! That way I don't have to strain to read someone else's ugly layout.

Nah, I'm not comfortable with keeping the text on, no matter that I can choose my font. For one thing, a font I have someone else may not have, and then you just lost the point of specifying it.

This is the header graphic I made, and you can see that where the text would go is filled with stuff, while the typography is carefully placed in a quiet field way over on the right. It's also Myriad Condensed Light 30 pt with zero (maybe even negative) leading and hand-done alignment.

If this was a web design job, I'd redo the graphic with the limitation in mind, but I know I can somehow find a customized LJ layout where I won't have this problem. Unfortunately your version of Refried Paper isn't it, and I really like your layout! :( Thanks for your help.
