hey all - just curious, does anyone know if there is a relationship between aspergers and geschwind syndrome?  or between aspergers and depression ( Read more... )

Welcome to the community! You sound like one of us.

I have my doubts about the usefulness of Geschwind syndrome in any other context than the continuing effort to understand the neurology of temporal lobe epilepsy. Perhaps some researcher would be interested in knowing that you have Geschwind syndrome but not temporal lobe epilepsy. I'll be surprised if Geschwind syndrome is recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, but they've made stranger decisions (and usually backed off).

A lot of us are depressed or bipolar. If I think back on what I've seen in my years hanging out in this community, I recall a few people who were hyper-moral. Such people tend to get into flame wars and leave. Sometimes they get banned, but it's usually not necessary. Did they exhibit the other characteristics of Geschwind syndrome? I think hyposexuality was overrepresented, but hyposexuality is overrepresented among Aspies generally. Nothing else stands out in my memory.

thanks =)

ditto, I don't think its particularly dysfunctional, but I'm interested in how my brain works in general...I was a psychology student at one point (now in nursing, so anatomy and physiology are still pretty interesting.)

haha, I might end up with a TLE diagnosis if I got tested for it, who knows. their seizures are different from the typical grand mal/petit mal thing going on with a lot of epileptic people. it's possible that a lot of the stuff I just chalk up to the "spiritual" is related to atypical temporal lobe activity...but I'm also quite sure that either way it doesn't have anything to do with the validity of the experience, (we know all about electrical activity in the brain from ( ... )

I have the symptoms of Geschwind syndrome but it's suspected I have temporal lobe epilepsy.

I might have TLE too, when I was reading "Seized" by Eve LaPlante there were parts where I just knew exactly what people were talking about in their own experience with TLE. that said, I've never had anything negative happen, and the symptoms of "Simple Partial Seizures" are just thinks that I've always associated with either deep introspective writing, or religious experience. they've actually been quite helpful to me, so I'm not interested in being medicated or having my driver's license taken away from me.

I'm particularly interested in a potential root cause to my depression, the geschwinds/potential TLE, and aspergers. I wouldn't want to be without any of the experiences and perceptual sets that these factors have given me, and I don't need "fixed", but I'm definitely interested in what's going on.

I can't drive because of my blank out spells. I nearly ran over my mother once, on our front lawn:-/

oh, lame. =/ I honestly prefer public transportation anyway, when it doesn't suck. (I got totally spoiled with NYC subways...I hate living places you have to drive now)

I've read that some ME/CFS patients have hypergraphia. If you look at other neurological conditions like Asperger's I'd say there's a high incidence. My brother would get a 500-word essay to write and end up writing thousands of words. I've looked through some of Eamon de Valera's papers (it's been theorised that he had Asperger's) and I stopped taking notes on one of his letters half way through because it was so long.

I think I like you, and I think we agree. I think we're just looking at labeling in different ways.

I've never really known what to make of it when I see something like "altered sexuality" in psychological literature. is recognizing something necessarily judging it? psychologists don't stigmatize everything they study...look at maslow and his "peak experiences", or any number of the more progressive thinkers out there in the field. then again, I was taught abnormal psych by a professor with a chronic mood disorder who emphasized cultural relativity in all her classes, and anatomy and physiology by someone who talked about her own aspergers and her children's autism at least once a week, so maybe I just lucked out. anthropology was another favorite subject of mine - plenty of recognition of concurrent psycho-social conditions there too, but it was overtly wrong from an anthropological perspective, to judge them ( ... )

Welcome!

I often (especially at work) write at more length and in more detail than is strictly necessary. With me I think it's a combination of aspergers and OCD.
