Samuel's surgery - Good News asl_ninja February 21 2008, 02:40:53 UTC
Samuel is doing just fine. Surgery was a textbook case, like the surgeon predicted. He's in CVICU for 24 hours, then likely to stay on the ward for 5 to 7 more days. Right now he is still sedated, but is not intubated and is not on ventilator - breathing fine, and with only slight noises, while lying on his back.

Thank you for your prayers

p.s. For those who are squeamish, feel free to stop here.

He went into pre-op at about 1:00 pm; into surgery at about 2:30; out of surgery at about 5:00; and settled into CardioVascular ICU by 6:15, which was the first time we were able to see him up close and personal. However, it wsa not very up close. He has an arterial tap (Blood Pressure monitor), a chest tube between ribs on right side (to evacuate any fluid buildup in pleural cavity - i.e., outside the lung but inside the chest), an IV (for meds), plus EKG leads pasted on his chest and abdomen (heart and heart rate monitor), and Oxygen monitor in two locations. He does not have a feeding tube up his nose. Yay!
