Hailing Mary

Nov 08, 2009 02:11

I seem to be turning into an ecclesiomaniac.  This week's church of choice  is St Mary's in Abercromby Street. It's one of the oldest in the city, and currently standing in as the pro-cathedral while St Andrew's is getting a makeover.  Clearly, St Mary's is in no such need of renovation.

The trouble is that most churches are extremely photogenic and, they stand still as well! LOL. I have some church pics to post but was of the same mind as yourself. After your ever beautiful shots, I will walk in thine shadow and henceforth posteth some more without fear!

I have philobasilical tendencies too, but thanks to my crazy Catholic upbringing, I feel totally inappropriate going into a church unless I'm at least wearing slacks. So I go on these walks around the city, pass gorgeous houses of worship, and then feel too self-conscious to entre in my casual walking kit!

Oh, don't worry. Just saunter in and take a look round. The Inquisition will only detain you for a couple of days and while you're on the rack you can admire the gorgeous cupola!

If you have a moment, I wonder if you would share what draws you to churches? It it the art or what?

Lots of factors: there are usually no restrictions on taking photographs, they're usually tranquil and a haven from the buzz of the city outside. And they usually have plenty to photograph. I especially like the stained glass, which can be difficult to capture, but still worth the effort. I rarely get any spiritual feelings from these visits, although I sometimes light a candle for a special intention.

Thank you! It was a good way of showcasing some of the unusual features of the church.

Great shots; LOVE the window detailing.

Though does that one window say "JST"? Jewish Standard Time?
