Shifted work to a bloc; M-W. Leaves me Thursday for Dad now - good all round because it lets sister off to catch the community bus to Queanbeyan when she needs to, and good (selfishly) because personal carer comes that day anyway & I can use some of the time for hubby's business, hopefully. He's had to grin and bear a lot of neglect lately ( Read more... )

bushwalk, work, doctor who, photography, housekeeping, study

I'm the same, I really didn't like S1 of NuWho on first viewing, but it's grown on me. Eccelstone is pretty good and Rose only became incredibly annoying and Mary Sue-ish when Ten came along and it became incredibly obvious that RTD was in love with David Tennant and Rose was his stand in.

I suppose I've always seen the Wose/Doctor thing as Big Wet Fanfic - you know, the sort of stuff all teenagers write where the OC wins over the lead because they're just so special.* Plus/minus exigencies resulting from having to consider the Young Female demographic. I look forward to seeing whether/to what degree a re-watch of s2 dispels that impression. It must have been fairly alienating at the time or I'd have rewatched it before now, surely *scratches head*.

* See also effing Jack Harkness (who in fairness was also much more watchable/likeable/credible in TEC/TDD than I'd remembered, but still far too Not!JasonKane to win me over this point). I suspect it may be a Small Doses problem.

Whenever people praise RTD as a writer, I like to point out his NA - a family on an estate, called the Tylers! And there's a bit of gay in it too! And the father is absent!

Seriously, Rose BLEW MY MIND with the originality.

Yeah, but at least we had dark psi stuff and Cwej and fucked-up stillborn shit to sweeten the blow.

I could probably forgive RTD even for Wose had he not imported (and kept bloody prolonging) the kitchen-sink element :( fucking Jackie. Do Not Get Me Started.

Call me old-fashioned, but "suitable companion" to me unequivocably does not include the inability to go without ringing or visiting Mummy every five minutes. That still rankles, I'd have to say, probably far more than anything else that annoyed me initially.

The "effect on those left behind" idea is a lovely juicy thing, but IMHO far more powerful when it lurks in the background and peeks out from the shadows (as opposed to running up and down in pink trackiedaks whining "but will she be SAFE..."). Less is more.
