I think that's one of the most commonly perpetrated misconceptions - that Mary Sues (or their male counterparts) are somehow inherently bad. No, they aren't. It's all about how they and the stories around them are written. Just because writing a terrible suefic is a common noob mistake doesn't mean it can't be done well. You gave one example, another one is the Mass Effect series, with Commander Shepard as possibly the biggest Sue ever. And still the series is praised for characterization and writing.
Here we of course get to the definition of a sue.. but since canon characters define the reality of the canon, they sort of by definition can't warp it. So sues who go to the same lengths as a sue-y canon protagonist get the blame mostly because they are OCs. And because, truthfully, it is hard to write a believable sue-type well, so most of them deserve the blame.
I'm with you. One question, though. Do we have to invent new OCs for this, or can it be stuff involving some of my current crop of OCs? I have a fair few from over five and a half years of writing, though making a new one is also fine.
I'm going to favorite this post because I'm really excited about it and I'd love to give it a shot even though I'm not all that confident about my writing skills
that's cool :) i will probably make posts about this and when there eventually will be Actual Dates And Stuff, send a bunch of PMs at everyone who's shown interest :D
Sidling in from ffr, I'd definitely be interested :) The post, and the comments so far, made me feel much better about my all female main cast for nanowrimo ^^
I have no idea what my nano shall have but there will be kick-ass female characters in it because, goddammit, I will practise what I preach. and it is not like I am setting it in a 14th century monastery or something :P
Up until 9 days ago I was writing Doctor Who fanfic for Nano
Now it's a sort of mad scifi fantasy fusion where magic is the world's energy supply and social class is mainly determined by how much magic people have. Also a secret society of treasure hunters (ala Indiana Jones or Lara Croft)
Yeah.
Now I just need time to actually start (is posting from work, bad Eve ^^)
*grin' that sounds pretty awesome in all accounts.
Right no I have an art thief who is BFF's with an FBI agent (too much white collar) and apparently, a painting the russian mob wants. this will get interesting :P
I don't have any OFCs of my own, but I'd be interested in checking out this fest when it gets started. Is there a comm to join or should I check back here for updates in a month or something?
