'Doctor Who' 6.01 - The Impossible Astronaut

I could complain about typical Moffat repeating himself, repeating aspects of past episodes, blah blah blah, and it's true. However, he actually got the emotional beats perfectly on target for me and so I'd be a hypocrite if I complained about plot stuff when Rusty sure had his issues in that area, while I praised him for his beautiful character ( Read more... )

I actually really really enjoyed this episode. For the first time in a long time, the characters felt solid. Everything was hitting just right for me. Matt is absolute perfection. I love everything about him and his portrayal of the Doctor and he is just getting better. I still have eh moments in regards to River Song, but I think it's less toward River Song now, and more toward how it was initially handled because it just didn't work then. But Alex Kingston is lovely, and the moment she jumped over his body to shoot even when she knew it was pointless that need to do something in the wake of that feeling of helplessness. It shattered me a bit and was so completely in character for her ( ... )

I agree completely with your assessment. River Song is meh but not nearly as grating as her series four self, Rory is LOVE (and does remind me a bit of good ol' Ian), and Karen still struggles from time to time, but she's much improved. Definitely a great script from Moffat, considering the kind of stuff he's hashed out in the past.

The introduction of River was TERRIBLE, and I say this as fan of Alex Kingston. It was just bad, bad, bad.

Yes, I thought specifically of you when I wrote the Karen comment, LOL!

If Moffat can manage to keep up this energy, this development through the rest of this series...Well I don't know that I will ever like the man, but I will be a happy happy viewer...and an absolutely giddy who fan.

Yup, he did a really good show hitting those emotional beats. I was quite impressed. :)

I don't know what to say about River, I still can't enjoy her character just yet. I love Alex Kingston, don't get me wrong but I can't enjoy her character. Something just rubs me the wrong way.

Matt Smith had the best moments in that episode. I couldn't stop laughing non stop when he was around.

Rory is becoming my favorite out of the companions in the new series. Amy, I think she's adorable but I'm quite a bit miffed that she told the Doctor she was having a baby all of the sudden. I was watching it with my family members and we all just went "I KNEW IT!" and I got a coke out of that. lol. We all kind of thought that was a predictable thing in the end (well sort of, maybe thought she was going to confess about the Silences or something).

I'll gather more thoughts soon when I calm down from the rush of the episode. Man it's been a long time since I watched an episode like that. You are right about "Blink", the rush of it all. I still favor "Blink" more.

There are a still moments that bug (her knowing how to fly the TARDIS better than the Doctor will always grate), but Kingston is so amazing that she tends to smooth over most of those moments with her brilliance. And she does have much better chemistry with Smith than she did Tennant.

I don't know if I favor "Blink" more or not. I'm afraid to rewatch it and have it ruined like the other Moffat episodes have been. I think when I enjoy an episode of his, I'm going to just stick with one watch to keep that balance, LOL!

I'm not warming up to Moffat. I never will. I can not stand his pov and his writing choices. However, when he does good, I will gladly acknowledge it.

It was really good, although how many times must we do the "look away/don't look away" villain? What is this, the third time now? :/

I'm calling it right now (well, I'm sure others have called it first, but getting my two cents in): River is the astronaut who kills the Doctor (didn't she talk about how she killed "the only man I have ever loved" last season? I bet it's why she's in prison. :x )

I haven't let go of my River hate -- it simmers down, but then they try to push the Doctor/River "love story" and it rises up allll over again (favorite part of the ep was when she asked him to trust her, and he was like "No." But he trusted Amy. :)

Matt Smith is utter perfection. And if Amy is actually pregnant, I will scream. :x

Moffat is a king at repeating himself, one of the many reasons I am NOT a fan. But I will give him credit when I feel it's due, and this was definitely one of his better episodes. Hopefully it doesn't all fall apart in the second part.

I've thought that River killed the Doctor ever since that was introduced, so I guess we'll see.

I have let go of my River hate -- until that is brought up. Then I'm all GRRRR! Again. If ONLY Moffat had waited to introduce her until this season, but throwing her in RIGHT BEFORE ROSE CAME BACK! It creates such awful memories. Ugh.
