I really must read The Night Watch. If only to see whether it's as good as Pratchett's (which is the best of his recent books IMO). I haven't even seen the film, it came out when I wasn't seeing films at all and I still don't belong to a video library. Madness.

You totally should, as a Tolkien and LeGuin reader! I'd be very interested to see what you think of how he uses and reinvents the classic elements. *nods*

Ha! I don't know now if I'd recommend seeing the film before the book or vice versa. Actually, yes. I would recommend seeing both films first before starting the books. Or you may well be disappointed by either. Trying not to spoil you here in case you've avoided the cut ... :p

Get thee to a video library!

Pratchett's is NOTHING like this. Don't even think of the two in the same sentence. Seriously, man. Totally different subjects, totally different takes. Worlds apart and no value judgements placed. I totally agree, though. Night Watch is my favourite Pratchett, hands down.

I've avoided being spoiled, not sure quite how considering that so many people on my flist have posted about it.

Alrighty, will try to get around to borrowing it.

Two books with similar names being different? I stand amazed :)

Night Watch is up there for me, but when I say best of his recent bear in mind that in my opinion the quality's been steadily dropping for the last 5 years or so. My favourite Pratchett (aside from Good Omens - not sure whether that counts or not) is probably Wyrd Sisters.

Haha, awesome.

Yeah, it's a fair enough call ... I can't bring myself to fault Pratchett so I kinda blame me not liking the characters as much as I could --- took me ages to accept Moist --- rather than him. But that's just me. As far as the Granny books go, I think Carpe Jugulum is my favourite with the whole mortality issue and those fabulous arguments with Mightily Oats about religion. Man, so awesome.

Having said that, I've just begun a re-read of the City Watch books so I'm all about the Vimes right now, hee hee.
