get a life, get a love, get a new big idea.

Ah, I forgot how good and interesting this album is. Such a compelling voice, deep and rich and yet soaring ... all for the love of the humdrum and humble ... his metaphors sometimes leave something to be desired but there's always that edge of irony that makes me forgive him ... but the music is so ( Read more... )

>the words the melody the security all curls back in a great silent wave of nostalgia with the sound of the first notes. He's a Virgo, too.

i can't deny...

you're right, i think, that his writing has flaws (his porpoise love songs about his wife, eh), but when the lyrics are put to his music, they can bowl me over. for some reason, "Listen" leaps to mind: "Mother Russia, badly burned. Her children lick her wounds, her wounds. Listen..." i tried over and over to figure out what that chanting was in the background and never did.

Hahaha, I didn't even realise I did that! I love the note on too ... such a haunting song, that. Off The Hurting or Songs From The Big Chair? Ooh, I didn't know the big chair is a Sylvia Plath reference, must remember to mention that to Z at some point ...

Porpoise love songs? *appalled yet intrigued* Yeah, it's very very rare but there's one line on the Raoul album that makes me wince every time and has made me do so ever since I first got it ... love (or is it life?) is not a cake to separate *groan* ... I sincerely hope I mishear it every time. Oooh, don't think I've ever heard Mother Russia, I really like that lyric/image ...

from the big chair. yes, the way he sings that line is very moving. it took me ages (and looking up the lyrics) to get the line "casino spanish eyes" (still makes no sense to me). he does odd things with his lyrics. yes, the cake to separate makes me cringe, too. eggs, roland. eggs.

i think he needs a better beta reader, come to think of it! but then i'm like that. any time a song i like contains something on the order of "for you and i," it prickles every time i hear it.

the big chair also has the Listen song on it. gorgeous sounds on that, just a few lyrics. the porpoise song was on a vinyl extras record i bought. i'll try to remember its name and find the words. it's rather sweet how much he loves her (caroline?).

god i love 'casino spanish eyes' ... i hear a pun in it (can see no spanish eyes) and i love the image too of dark but sparkling bright ... but ha, eggs roland! now there's an icon caption that only and you i would find highly amusing.

man, i really should get the big chair. and hey, i've been meaning to ask you, did you read his tour diary on the tearsforfearsfans.com? so funny and prickly and kinda old uncley too ... desperate housewives! *kills self laughing* yeah, i think it is caroline, he mentions her in the diary, it's really quite candid if sporadic.
