Hmm. Well according to new research a friend of mine is doing, 80% of faculty positions in my field come from just 26 schools. I definitely didn't realize how important your program/school ranking is when it comes to applying to faculty jobs (if that's what you are intending on doing).

Do you have a list of the 26 schools, as I'll be applying to Sociology PhD programs this coming fall. Thanks!

In Art History the list is much, much shorter. Everyone comes from Princeton, Harvard, UC Berkeley, Columbia, NYU IFA. There are a few others who scatter from different programs (Chicago, Northwestern, Yale, John Hopkins, UCLA) but they are super rare.

Oh okay you mean like the research they're doing. I wrote one of the students and he was like be SURE you want to study COGNITION and the EVOLUTION OF BEHAVIOR.
Which is just exactly what I wanted.

Start early! I can't stress this enough! Make sure you get LORs early on, too, and give all the information about all the schools to which you're applying to your recommenders early.

I second this. I sent a report to a school I ended up not applying to after talking to current students and then had to pay to send a report to another school. Granted I only ended up paying for one, but I can't help but wonder what that one school is thinking since all they have from me is a GRE report.

But how far ahead can I send scores? Did you run into any problems while doing this? I'm taking the gre in April for a 2011 application.

I would say to get a general idea of what funding is like at the school, if it's important to you.
I think only two of the programs I applied to offer full tuition remission, which is something to keep in mind if you don't want to take out a ton of loans and be in debt (which I feel will be my situation).
