Hey again--thanks so much for the advice with what to do about the missing signature across the recommendation flap. It looks like I'll be sending out everything tomorrow, so I'll just have my recommender sign it tomorrow morning before running to the post office ( Read more... )

applications, supplemental materials, graduate application

I'm not sure about the artsy bits, but for the more general questions:

I would definitely make some sort of note identifying/explaining the materials, but wouldn't go so far as to print out a copy of the application... especially if the school doesn't ask for it.

I know it's a different situation, but I'm helping my little cousin apply to college right now and the admissions website pretty explicitly say NOT to print out the app. It will get printed out in the office anyway and you don't want to be redundant.

Okay, thanks! A couple of my schools do ask for a printed copy, but most of them don't. And it's been 10 years since I last filled out college apps (yikes...) so it's slipped my mind. :)

I included a cover letter with a list of the documents in my package, in order, and didn't print out the app itself.

I included a header for my SOP, just as you described.

Good luck!

I really like the checklist idea. What a simple way to keep yourself from going crazy wondering if you forgot anything.

Thanks for that! I've been maintaining a chart for my own sanity in Google Docs of what each school needs, but to create one for each school to include totally helps as well.

None of the schools are asking for a physical portfolio--I think the paradigm's shifted towards digital work to make it easier on everyone. :) I do have to submit a PDF of work on a CD and I'm working on compiling that.

I've been running my essays by a few friends, and one out-of-town friend did spend a few minutes playing devil's advocate/sounding board and bounced ideas off me for a while, which did help a lot. I have both statements finalized now, finally.

Thanks so much! :)

Generalizing from my experience with 15 (!) applications, schools don't want you to send duplicates of anything--so if you've submitted something online, don't enclose a paper copy unless specifically asked to do so.

I'm pasting below the template I've used for a supplemental materials cover letter. I format it in Word so that it uses the same font/layout as the materials themselves. Feel free to borrow it if it's useful to you!

[My address]
[My e-mail / my phone number]

[Date]

[Address where materials will be sent]

To Whom It May Concern:

Enclosed, please find the following supplemental materials to accompany my application to [school] for [program]:

• Writing sample
• 2 official transcripts from [school 1]
• 2 official transcripts from [school 2]

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

That's awesome--thank you so, so much! The touch of adding an actual signature at the end is a really good one, too.

And my original list was at 15--I've since whittled it down to 8. :) It would've been longer if I'd started doing research earlier, because my original aim was to go to school abroad, but I'll try for a study abroad instead, I think.

Glad I could help!

And the study abroad plan sounds like a good one. My subletter this past summer was a graphic design student from Austria who did an internship in New York. She loved both her experience in the US and her work back home.

Hey, I am applying to Pratt too (for the MS in art history)! Thanks for asking these questions, I was wondering the same thing. Details make a difference. Good luck with your essay, I'm finishing mine up as well.
