I have been under the impression that grad schools don't expect fall semester grades. This especially makes sense for December, even January deadlines, as most people including myself don't get official grades until break and student services pretty much shuts down. I requested transcripts in October because I'd heard my school was slow with them ( Read more... )

Actually, the "don't worry, you'll get in somewhere!" comments from my friends and family help me feel better. It reaffirms that I am well-qualified for graduate programs and the chances of my getting accepted are pretty high because of those qualifications.

I agree with the other posters... you should be fine.

As for those reassuring comments, they usually make me feel worse and I try to explain to my family/friends the low acceptance rates for these positions because of funding /space issues.

Hmm. I don't think I could get away with not sending fall grades, but the programs I'm applying to are very quantitative and a few of my classes last quarter were important for that...

When my friends/family try to "make me feel better" by assuring me of my great chances, I tell them the stats. That usually shuts them up pretty fast. Because even they can't deny that even great candidates must be rejected with those stats. BUT, I have taken the stance of "the only reason I will be rejected - even if I am rejected by all the schools I applied to, which is totally possible - is because the perfect faculty member to work with me has too many students this year, a fact which he/she no doubt resents bitterly." I know that I am a good candidate. Most days, anyway. :)

Heh, that's why I don't even look at the stats. It'll only make you nervous and push you to eliminate yourself early, which is possibly part of the reason those stats are made public. Just say thanks and that you'll try your best.

Look very carefully at the application instructions; I found hidden away in one of my applications the statement that they required a new transcript when fall grades became available (this has been a very annoying application to begin with so it doesn't surprise me that it was hidden in the fine print). I'm just going to send updated transcripts to all of my schools since my university doesn't charge for them and it can't really hurt. If they did charge, then I probably wouldn't bother unless it was requested ( ... )

Well I already have all my transcripts, that's why I brought it up. The general consensus seems to be to send updated ones to the Feb/Mar schools and leave the other ones be unless I'm asked to send in new ones. :)
