When I took the general GRE, I'm not sure that I picked the right departments. Some schools are really vague about which department they want scores sent to, if any, and some say psych department but then I got confused about whether I should have sent it to the psych department or a specific psych department (I/O, Social, etc). And I'm a dork ( Read more... )

You should probably call the departments to make sure they have the scores, and tell them where you sent them, if they can't find them. I was applying to the Medieval St. program at Cornell a couple of years ago and had sent my scores by accident to the English dept., and it took them forever to find them.

At most large schools, it seems there is a central repository in "Graduate Admissions" that each department consults to get your scores. So it should find its way. But there's no reason not to ask each school where they want things sent. Try looking on the Graduate Admissions website for department codes if you can't find one on the Department's Admissions page. Sometimes you will find that the school doesn't want you to use department codes at all.

Yes, that sounds like a statement of purpose. That school doesn't *also* require a statement of purpose, do they? That would be weird.

That was the only thing that school asked for.

When I chose my schools after my general GRE, it didn't give me the option of codes, though. So the grad school page would say "use institution code xxxx, department code yyyy" but didn't say specifically what department that was. I thought I would just memorize the codes and use them, but it turns out it just asked for department names. So I wasn't really sure. But I'll end up asking. I was just curious.

When I took the GRE, I sent my scores to the Film and Art Dept, but I later changed my mind and applied to Japanese Studies programs at the same schools. When I contacted the Japanese Studies depts., they said it was fine that I sent them to the other depts. I would email the program coordinators, though.
