AN;; So I went to the state fair today for the first time in almost eleven years. It was fun, walking around aimlessly. It was still fun being stuck in traffic for two hours trying to get there. It was not fun seeing so many freaking people packed into one place.

Report #3 - Kill Switch

The Jonghyun boy does not have a trigger gene. A most interesting discovery. It took almost ten men to hold him down to inject a sedative. His strength is remarkable. His true power though, remains untapped. Perhaps we can develop something to force him into a trigger state, just like the Subject. Run memory base.

--

“You are absolutely disgusting.” Key hissed as he held out one of Jonghyun’s socks in front of his face with two fingers. He held it as far as he could from his body in front of Jonghyun’s face. “Oh. I was wondering where that went.” Jonghyun snatched it from him and stood up from the couch, throwing it neatly into the open bedroom.

Jinki laughed from his spot on the floor, books and notes spread out in a semi-circle around him. Test time was approaching, and the only ones who seemed adequately prepared were Key and Jinki. Jonghyun spent his days lazing around on the couch or trying to trap Jinki in the bedroom, while Taemin helped Minho study furiously for their tests.

“Jonghyun. You realize if you don't study then you're going to fail right? It takes you an abnormal amount of time to absorb information like this." Jonghyun shrugged his shoulders. “I'm fine. I've gone over the notes, and Jinki's been teaching me by lamp light at night. I think I"ll be fine. Unlike this super computer over here who will probably screw up the curve for everyone else." Jonghyun leaned over and playfully whacked Jinki in the head as he studied.

“Hey! What was that for?!" Jinki rubbed the back of his head and pouted causing Jonghyun to sigh and throw himself on top of other boy. “Oh you. You're so cute sometimes." He pinched his cheeks and rolled off of him when Jinki shrugged him off.

“Whatever! I'm cute all of the time."

--

Jonghyun was in his advanced physical combat class when he saw a familiar boy pop his head into the gym with a smile on his face. Jonghyun gave him a confused look before the boy mouthed that his class was canceled. Jinki made his way to the bleachers where several other girls were already sitting and whispering excitedly.

“That one right there! His name is Jonghyun. He's pretty much the best fighter ever. He beat up Taecyeon without even breaking a sweat! And Taecyeon is huge!" Jinki leaned back on the bleachers and smiled. Yep. That was his boyfriend.

The teacher called everyone to attention and had them sit around the edges of the mat. It looked like they were going to be doing some sparring. It was no surprise when Jinki say Jonghyun's hand go up for volunteers.

“Jonghyun! Always good of you to volunteer. Anyone else?" Jinki saw a large boy stand up and pop his neck. Jonghyun smirked and bounced up and down on the balls of his feet. “Taecyeon. Of course." The two walked towards each other and bowed at the center of the mat. “Ready to lose midget?"

“Okay. First off. The midget joke is getting old. Anyone could be considered a midget next to you. Second off, no, I'm not." They both took their stances as the whistle blew. Jinki stood up and cheered for Jonghyun, just like the rest of the girls on the bleachers.

--

The rest of the year blew by in a blur. Key had gathered as much information as he could about the Syndicate, planning to send a report to Jonghyun’s father during the break. They spent their time as normal people their age, going out and having fun, studying for tests. Minho even had a part time job.

Little to their knowledge, there was someone following them all the time, capturing their every movement and sending it back to the man in the white coat. Jinki always felt like someone was watching them, but he always shook off the feeling as being paranoid.

Jonghyun took Jinki out on dates. They went out to have fun. They stayed in to cuddle with each other. They hung out with their friends and kept each other company. As the days passed by, Jonghyun’s love for Jinki grew more and more. It was the fuel that drove Jonghyun to protect him with his life.

Everything was going great for them. Until the second year of university started. That’s when Jonghyun started to notice some differences in Jinki that he couldn’t ignore anymore.

--

It was the middle of the night. Jonghyun was passed out with Jinki in his arms, snoring softly as Jinki fidgeted fitfully in his sleep. He was having the same nightmares over and over again, about a man in a white coat, a tube. There were wires coming out of his body. He could hear malicious laughter. The voices were always blurred, and he could never make out a face. But tonight was different. He heard the man in the white coat’s voice. Activate Project Lucifer. Jinki’s dreams disappeared in an instant. His eyes snapped open, glowing that icy blue as he sat up in the bed, eyes turned toward Jonghyun’s sleeping form. Without even realizing it, his hands went to his neck and pressed down.

Jonghyun’s eyes snapped open as soon as his airway was constricted. He tried to pry Jinki’s hands off of his throat, but in his half awake state, he couldn’t muster up the strength yet. So instead, he twisted his body and kicked Jinki off the side of the bed which made him release his death grip on Jonghyun’s throat.

“What the hell Jinki?! What are you doing?!” He hissed. His eyes widened though as he saw Jinki’s eyes from the other side of the bed. Jonghyun stood up and moved slowly towards the door, watching him carefully. Jinki lunged for Jonghyun, who slipped out of the door wordless and ran across the living room to the kitchen.

Jinki didn’t seem to lose any time in running after him and cornering him in the kitchen. He reached behind him without taking his eyes off of Jonghyun and balanced a knife in his hands. Jonghyun held his hands out. “Jinki. Jinki. What’s going on? Jinki!” Jinki lashed out with the knife, managing to cut part of Jonghyun’s cheek.

Jonghyun dived underneath him and grabbed his arms, putting him into a lock. He pressed a pressure point that made him drop the knife with a clatter to the floor. “Jinki! Listen to me! It’s Jonghyun. JONGHYUN. I love you. You love me. What are you doing?!” Jinki shuddered in his arms and suddenly went limp. Jonghyun held him up and kicked the knife away before lowering him to the ground.

He heard Jinki groan as his eyes fluttered open. “Jong... Jonghyun? What’s going on?” He looked around confused for a moment then shocked as his eyes fell on the cut on Jonghyun’s face.

“Your face! What happened?”

“You... you were sleep walking. And you picked up a knife or something. Lucky I noticed you were gone in time or something bad could’ve happened.” Jinki’s eyesbrows furrowed as he tried to remember what happened.

“I’m sorry Jonghyun... Oh god... Let me help you clean that up...” As Jinki mopped up his face, Jonghyun’s face went grave. So all the things he noticed about Jinki that were a little unnatural... He couldn’t deny it now. He gazed into the happy smile on Jinki’s face as he bandaged him up. Who would be cruel enough to make Jinki someone like him?

--

The man in the white coat watched all of the images of Jonghyun and Jinki together blow across the screen. For almost half a year, that was the only things he could find that were of any significance in the memory bank. So exactly how much did they mean to each other? He mused over his question as his finger pressed the ‘delete’ key, erasing the memories from Jinki forever.

--

Upon closer examination, the Jonghyun boy seems to be very well crafted. Though his brain does not pick up as fast as the Subject, tests show it holds the same capacity. It is amazing how the Cartel managed to harness the power of instinct. He is held separate from the others for further study. It seems the others were failed attempts. Though what baffles us the most is what happens when the Subject and Jonghyun meet. Play field recording.

--

Jonghyun didn’t remember the last time he slept, but he wasn’t tired anymore. His brain was completely wired, full of thoughts of Jinki and the rest of his friends. He stopped struggling against the chains when the men in white coats started to send shocks of electricity through them, causing his body to spasm in white hot pain.

He sat against the wall, eyes cold and calculating as he rested his head on his knees. He wrapped his arm around them and stared at the entrance to the room. There was only so much longer they could keep him here.

Suddenly, the door opened with a hiss, pulling him out of his thoughts. “Hello Jonghyun. I thought I’d take you to see Jinki today,” the man in the white coat said. Jonghyun didn’t move. He narrowed his eyes at the other man. There was something off about the way he smiled. The man in the white coat snapped his fingers, and someone came in behind him, walking towards Jonghyun. A collar was snapped around his neck before the chains were removed from his limbs.

“Shock collar. Make a single wrong move, and you’ll be dropped to the ground faster than you can blink. The man in the white coat tapped his watch and turned to leave, beckoning Jonghyun to follow him with his hand. “We don’t have all day now.” Jonghyun remained silent and angry, but still followed the man out of the room.

He walked behind him silently, eyeing everything and everyone he came across. The place was stark white, cold steel lining the walls of the rooms that had windows. He saw test tubes, scientists pouring and mixing things, and occasionally heard screams echoing through the complex. Everything made him sick to his stomach.

The man in the white coat stopped in front of a heavily bolted door. He leaned forward, letting the security system scan his retina. He pressed his palm into the glowing green pad next to the door. There was a short beep before he straightened up and held his finger out as a small circle in the door opened. A strange device came out with a needle and pricked his finger, collecting a drop of blood before retreating back behind the door.

“Security scan confirmed. Welcome, Rain.” The door hissed open as the man in the white coat turned to smile as Jonghyun, ushering him inside.

--

Jonghyun was not prepared for what he saw. His jaw dropped slightly in horror as his feet led him to the tube where Jinki was held. “What did you do to him? What... WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HIM?!” Jonghyun roared as he turned around. He was about to lunge for the other man, but a shock coursed through his body, effectively dropping him to his knees. He breathed hard, leaning against the tube for support.

“Relax. We haven’t done anything to him. He’s just in suspended animation so we can... examine a few things. Like we’ll do with you eventually.” Jonghyun snarled from the ground. “Over my dead body you will!”

“Hopefully not,” Rain mused. “It’d be a shame to kill a fine specimen such as yourself.” Jonghyun turned sorrowful eyes towards Jinki in the tube. There were so many wires running in and out of his body. His eyes were closed, a cloud of bubbles flowing from his mouth. Jonghyun’s hand curled into a fist.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Those wires are hooked up to vital organ systems. You’d kill him.” Jonghyun glared at Rain again before bringing his arm away from the tube, standing up slowly to avoid another shock from the collar.

“Take him to the field.” Jonghyun didn’t take his eyes off the man in the white coat as other came to pull him away. Rain smirked as he pressed a few buttons on the dashboard in front of him, retracting the wires from Jinki’s body and slowly draining the liquid.

--

It took ten men to restrain Jonghyun as they tried to inject him with something. “Like hell I’m letting you stick that needle in me!” He let out a pained yell as he felt the needle enter his neck and inject something hot and burning into his bloodstream before shoving him out of the room and into an open field.

Jonghyun was still fuming, pulling at the shock collar on his neck. He squinted, the bright sunlight filling his vision as he examined the field. There was a large black scorch mark on the ground. A few bits of scrap metal here and there. He walked out towards the middle of the field his hands in his pockets, looking back and forth at the empty expanse.

“What the fuck is this.” He let out an angry breath. Moments later, he heard the doors to the building behind him open again, this time, revealing Jinki dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. “Jinki!” Jonghyun only took two steps towards him before he knew something was wrong.

“J-Jonghyun? Oh my god, Jonghyun, I don’t know what’s happening! I keep blacking out, and, and, and... I don’t remember anything! I can’t remember anything before our second year of university! I don’t remember how we met, I don’t remember...” Jonghyun broke into a run to catch Jinki before he hit the ground.

He wrapped his arms around him and let Jinki bury his face into his chest as he buried his face into Jinki’s hair. “It’ll be okay Jinki... It’ll be okay. I promise.” Jinki held him tighter and let tears fall from his face.

“I don’t know what’s happening to me Jonghyun. What’s going on? I hear them talking about me when they put me in that tube. I hear them talking about you too. Do you know what’s going on?” Jonghyun stared off into the distance for a moment. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier Jinki. But I’m just like you.”

“Just... like me? What are you talking about?” Jonghyun gulped and held Jinki at arm distance.

“You’re an artifically engineered bioweapon. Basically, you were created in a test tube and genetically enhanced to be the perfect destroyer of anything.”

“What... What?” Jinki was taken aback. Jonghyun smiled sadly. “I’m not as well created as you... but there’s no trigger switch for me.”

“Trigger switch?”

“The moments you black out? They triggered some programming gene implanted in your body. It takes over your mind and turns you into the perfect killer.” Jinki covered his mouth in horror before turning to look at Jonghyun again. “What? And you knew? You knew I was this, thing, designed to kill? How long have you known?”

Jonghyun was silent for a moment. “How long have you known?” Jinki asked again, this time, barely a whisper. “Since the time you tried to kill me in our second year,” Jonghyun said, staring off into the distance again.

“And... you? When did you find out about yourself?” Jonghyun turned to look at Jinki. “When I was little. I would heal faster when I got hurt. I was always stronger than people twice my size. I had perfect eye sight. I had near perfect aim. It wasn’t hard to figure out when I started to pick everything up so easily.” Jinki tried to digest the information.

“But then-”

“That’s quite enough. Activate Project Lucifer.” Jinki’s eyes widened in horror before he slumped over again. Jonghyun stood up and watched Jinki’s body warily.

“Run sequence number one zero nine four one one.” Jinki’s body suddenly stood up, blue eyes glowing at Jonghyun. He lunged towards Jonghyun, slamming his fist into Jonghyun’s chest, knocking all the air out of him. Jonghyun took a few steps back and raised his fists to defend himself. He didn’t have time to think as Jinki attacked him again. If it was a fist fight they wanted, they were going to get it.

It was like a choreographed dance on the field. Jonghyun could see where all the punches and kicks were coming from, dodging them with ease and occasionally counter attacking. He didn’t have time to hesitate, completely familiar with the fact that Jinki in this state wouldn’t hesitate to kill him.

He landed a blow to Jinki’s chest that knocked him off balance. “Jinki, I don’t want to do this. Jinki. Please. Please,” Jonghyun said. He might as well have been pleading to a wall. Then something unthinkable happened.

“Kill switch engage.” Jonghyun felt his body freeze then start rebelling against him as another voice over the speakers spoke. His pupils dilated for a moment before his head exploded in pain. He let out an anguished scream, clutching his head.

“J...Jong... Jong... hyun. Jonghyun... JONGHYUN!” Jinki’s eyes flashed between brown and blue before they screwed shut, opening back up to brown. He ran over to the other boy on the ground, shaking his shoulders. “Jonghyun! Jonghyun! Are you okay? I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to-” Jinki didn’t have time to finish before Jonghyun’s arm went flying out, sending Jinki back several feet across the ground.

Jinki groaned in pain as he held his ribs. His eyes widened in horror as he watched Jonghyun slowly push himself up off the ground. “Jin....ki. I’m... sorry. M-m....Move. I don’t.... want to hurt. You.” Jonghyun’s eyes flashed between brown and red before stopping at red.

“Destroy the Subject.” Jonghyun’s body tried to move, but Jonghyun was fighting against it with every fiber of his being. “Destroy. The Subject.” Jinki got up alarmed, but slowly made his way over to Jonghyun. He wrapped his arms around the other boy in a hug before pressing a kiss to his lips.

Jonghyun’s eyes widened, pupils dilating again before fading back to brown. “I... Jinki. Oh my god. I almost killed you. I wanted to kill you. But then... the heat. It went away. I just-” Then another shock coursed through his body, dropping him to the ground as he screamed out in pain before passing out.

“Jonghyun!”

“Deactivate.” Jinki’s eyes closed suddenly as he fell against the other boy. The men in the white coats came out to collect the two.

--

I’m not yet sure what to call this phenomenom. It seems their voices have been engraved into the internal wiring. Though it is not strong enough to override the program gene, it seems to prove potent enough to interfere long enough to incapacitate and short circuit the program. How interesting. I will investigate this matter.
