AN;; I feel so absolutely terrible today, it’s not even funny. My mom has the flu, and I think she may have passed it to me. We were supposed to get our flu shots on Friday too! UGH! I’m going to cry if I have the flu. Because I’ll feel so freaking dead. I’m late working on requests too but I’m just too tired... T^T

Report #4 - Into the Memory Database

Further studies have revealed nothing between the Subject and Jonghyun. We still do not understand their connection and the gene override. We have tried to simulate it with artifical voice changers but nothing works except for their true voices. All I can do now is peruse the memory database and delete as much as I can to see if I can somehow get rid of this gene override. Run memory database.

Jonghyun seemed different after that night he told Jinki that he was sleep walking. Jinki didn’t even notice the bruises on his neck until he accidentally walked in on him brushing his teeth in the bathroom. “Jonghyun! You neck! What happened?” Jinki said in alarm, pulling his shoulder back so he could get a better look.

“Ah...” Jonghyun smiled before turning back to the sink, spitting out the toothpaste foam and washing his face with cold water. “Choke hold during class. Guy got a little bit carried away. You’d think he was trying to kill me or something.” Jinki gave him a horrified look before wrapping his arms around the other boy and resting his head on his shoulder.

“You should really be more careful.” Jonghyun laughed a little bit before smiling at Jinki through the mirror. “It’ll take a lot more than a choke hold from someone in class to take me down. You of all people should know that. Jonghyun turned around and kissed Jinki softly.

Jinki knew something was wrong. Jonghyun’s smile seemed different lately whenever he looked at Jinki. He wanted to ask, but if Jonghyun hadn’t said anything about it by now, he was probably going to deny it if Jinki asked anyway.

“Jonghyun...” Jinki said hesitantly. He could feel his breath on his cheek as they embraced in the bathroom. “Hmm?” Jonghyun started to press kisses against his jawline. Jinki squeezed his eyes shut and held Jonghyun at arm distance. “Is... something wrong? You’ve been acting weird.” Jinki reached up and stroked his cheek as Jonghyun stared off into the distance.

“Nothing’s wrong. I’m just tired that’s all. I’m looking forward for this semester to be over so we can enjoy the summer together.” Jonghyun yawned to emphasize how tired he was and massaged his left shoulder before rotating it and moving towards the bedroom. Jinki looked after with him a sad expression before sighing and running his hand through his hair. Maybe normal life was taking its toll on Jonghyun. He seemed much more lively and happy when they were runinng for their lives from gunfire.

Jinki did his nightly routine and entered the bedroom to see Jonghyun already sleeping under the sheets, his chest rising and falling with his breathing. Jinki climbed into bed slowly and propped himself up on his elbow to look at Jonghyun for a moment. His face still looked worried, even in his sleep. Jinki reached over to trace some lines on his face before laying down and throwing an arm around Jonghyun’s waist. The other man stirred in his sleep, adjusting his arm so that Jinki could snuggle closer to him, and turning to they were facing each other.

“Good night Jonghyun. I love you.”

“Gnight Jinki, I love you too,” he mumbled sleepily.

--

Every one started to notice the drastic changes in Jonghyun. He wasn’t causing trouble anymore. He didn’t respond with cheeky comments when Key yelled at him for something. He wasn’t motivated to wake up early to spar with Minho before going to school. He even stopped asking Taemin about his latest toys.

Instead he was more withdrawn. He stared off into space more often, thinking about things that were far out of Jinki’s reach. He still stoles hugs and kisses, but instead of it being playful and full of mischief, they were almost like goodbyes, like each one could be their last.

Key sat Jonghyun down to talk to him one day when the others went out to go grocery shopping. “Jonghyun. All of us have to be blind, deaf, and dumb not to notice what’s been going on with you. What’s happening Jonghyun? And don’t you dare try to get out of answering me so help me god.” Jonghyun opened his mouth to repeat what he had been saying since the beginning of the semester but closed his mouth without a word.

Jonghyun and Key stared at each other from across the kitchen table before Jonghyun sunk down in his seat with a dejected sigh. “How much do you know about me Key?”

“Pretty much everything.”

“Everything?” Jonghyun asked with a raised eyebrow. He was being serious, and Key knew it.

“Everything.” The silent understanding passed between the two like a bolt of lightning. So Key knew after all. “And you didn’t tell me you knew.”

“Per orders of your father. You understand.” Jonghyun did understand. He drummed his fingers on the table, staring past Key again. Thinking didn’t suit Jonghyun. It didn’t suit him at all, Key thought to himself as he watched his distant expression.

“What’s wrong Jonghyun?” Jonghyun’s gaze snapped back to Key.

“It’s Jinki. He’s... like me.” Key was taken aback. Of course, why didn’t he notice before? Jonghyun went and recounted the story of Jinki trying to kill him one night in the kitchen. Key listened, absorbing all of the information slowly, the cogs in his mind calculating.

“He... He can’t live like I do Key. He’s not that type of person.” Jonghyun bit his bottom lip as his attention turned elsewhere. “That’s why the Syndicate wants him back. They’ve implanted some sort of... command phrase or something into him.”

“What makes you think he’s not a robot?”

“Oh I know he’s not a robot.” Key shuddered at Jonghyun’s statement and tried not to think about his words too much. “This is an interesting development... It explains some of the schematics I found when I managed to breach one of their computers for a few minutes...”

“Are you going to tell my father that I know?” Key shook his head slowly. “I’m sure by now he knows that you know. You still call him your father though.”

“Old habits are hard to break. He’s been good to me. Even if it’s not for the reasons I want.” Key nodded again thoughtfully before getting up from his chair. “Stop moping around. It won’t change who Jinki is. You should probably be concentrating on making him happy until we get found out again and have to move. I don’t think we’ll be able to stay in one place anymore.” Jonghyun nodded and let his head fall back past the chair.

They heard the front door open followed by the sounds of cheery voices belonging to Jinki and Taemin. Minho was stuck carrying a majority of the grocery bags. He dropped them all on the table as Jonghyun stood up with a smile. “Mm, hello baby. Get anything for me?” Jonghyun murmured into Jinki’s ear, watching a blush curl up on his face.

“I got your favorite poptarts and cereal... and some other things...” Jinki said looking at him. His smile was genuine again. He turned to glance over at Key who just smiled and gave him a thumbs up. Jonghyun pushed past Jinki and started to rummage through some bags.

“Good. I’m starving. What’s for lunch?”

--

Jinki didn’t understand Jonghyun’s mood swings anymore. During the day, he was as happy as could be, almost to his old self again. But at night, sometimes Jinki would wake up because of the absence of body heat next to him and peek outside of their bedroom to see Jonghyun staring off into space on the couch. He always hurried to bed before Jonghyun came back though.

The weather steadily got warmer though as the semester passed. The summer came sooner than later, and that meant Jonghyun could finally get that well deserved vacation from school and all the other stresses of life, where he could finally pretend that he was just a normal person.

“Yah! Hurry up already!” Jonghyun rolled his eyes behind his sunglasses as the other trooped out of the house with their things. They rented a beach house to stay at for the month, and Jonghyun surprised everyone by being the first packed and first to be ready to leave.

He leaned against the van in a pair of shorts and slip on shoes. Pulling his sunglasses down and whistling when he saw Jinki finally leave the house. “And who is this gorgeous being walking towards me?” Jonghyun smirked and gave Jinki a long sloppy kiss. “It’s not good to be drunk this early in the morning.” Jonghyun whipped around and flipped Key off.

“Excuse me. I’m not drunk.”

“Then you’re just disgusting. Even Taemin and Minho don’t act like that.”

“They yell louder during sex. We’re considerate.”

“Maybe you guys are quieter during sex because you’re just not as amazing as me.” Jinki and Taemin both turned a furious red as they mumbled something about loading stuff into the car and disappeared together looking mortified.

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.” Jonghyun and Minho glared at each other through narrowed eyes. “We’ll see about that, right Jinki?” Jinki made a sound like being strangled and leaned against the trunk in absolute horror.

--

The beach house was about a three hour drive away. Normally, it was six hours but Minho had his ways, and for some reason, there were never any police around when Minho drove. Key, Jonghyun, and Jinki slept on each other all the way there. Taemin glanced into the rear view mirror and smiled at the sight.

“We don’t really get a chance to be normal, do we?” Taemin asked Minho as the other man drove. Minho just shrugged his shoulders. “Isn’t this normal?”

--

Jonghyun stretched out in front of the beach house before running inside and grabbing dibs on one of the rooms. Jinki threw some bags at him before shaking his head. “Stop calling dibs and go help unload the stuff already!”

Jonghyun ran over to him and grabbed him, kissing him with as much energy and passion he had before letting go with a grin and running out to help with unloading. Jinki stood breathless for a moment, his hand flying up to his chest to help him catch his breath. He smiled to himself before chuckling slightly. He had to be the luckiest person in the world.

--

Jonghyun laughed as Jinki tripped on the loose sand. Who trips over sand? Jonghyun hauled him up and pulled him towards the shore. Three weeks had passed already. They only had another week left before they had to go back to the house, but still had another month of summer vacation.

Everyone was a few shades darker, even Key who applied the most sunblock on himself, mumbling something about skin cancer.

They were playing in the beach when Jinki heard it again. Jinki suddenly stopped and turned around with an anxious expression on his face. “Jinki? Something wrong?” Jonghyun asked, still breathless from running.

“I keep hearing camera shutters...” Jonghyun stood beside Jinki and looked around, scanning for someone who wasn’t supposed to be there. His playful mood was gone, replaced by nervous tension. Jinki and Jonghyun turned in the same direction and squinted. That’s when Jonghyun heard the camera take another picture.

He squinted his eyes, then saw the glare off the camera lense. “Stay here,” he said to Jinki, never taking his eyes off that spot. He walked towards it, tilting his head and popping his knuckles. He heard a faint rustling as the camera disappeared from view. He broke out into a run and blew through the bushes, seeing a person running off.

Jonghyun chased after him, and weaving through the trees. The camera guy made the mistake of turning around to see where Jonghyun was and ended up crashing into a tree, knocking himself out. The last he saw was Jonghyun standing over him with a dark expression.

“Who are you?” The man just chuckled before his vision turned black. Jonghyun squatted down and felt for a pulse. He still had one. He pulled the camera off of his neck and was surprised by how heavy it was. He turned it on, glad it still worked despite the screen being cracked. He was not happy with what he saw.

All of the pictures were of them. Some at the university. The street. The grocery story. The beach house. Jonghyun stood up and sighed, looking at the man’s body on the ground. Better safe than sorry.

--

Everyone knew something was wrong when Jonghyun came back with a grave expression on his face. “I don’t understand this camera Key. This is your department.” Jonghyun placed the camera on the table. Jinki noticed he was covered in sweat and dirt and didn’t ask about what happened to the camera man, lest he not want to know.

Key examined it in his hands before popping out the memory card on the bottom and looking through the internal wiring. It was almost broken apart anyway, and it only took some gentle prying from his hands before it opened. He took a look at the wires before getting up and leaving, only to return with his laptop and some wires.

He plugged a few things in here and there, moved some wires around then started to type furiously on his keyboard. “Shit.” Jonghyun looked over at Key before walking over to him and leaning onto the chair to look at his computer screen.

“Satellite uplink? You mean the pictures from this camera are sent directly to someone somewhere?” Key squinted his eyes again as he typed some more. “I’m trying to trace it back to the destination but...” A big error message flashed up on Key’s screen before it turned black.

“Well then. Someone’s watching us. But who?” Jonghyun stood back up and crossed his arms over his chest. “There aren’t any pictures of the house. Just when we’re in public. You don’t think it’s the Syndicate, do you?” Key sighed. “Who else could it be?”

Jinki looked scared. “So... they found us again? We’ll have to move again?” Key managed to get his laptop to turn back on, but the pictures were gone. Key pulled up surveillance on the house and noted nothing out of the ordinary.

“No...” He said hesitantly. Key sighed and closed his laptop again. “There’s nothing on the house.” He turned towards Jonghyun who kept his eyes on Jinki. “Do you want to move again? I think it’s better if we do. I mean, if they’re already following us in public, they probably know where the house is.”

“I’m confused. If they know where we are, how come they haven’t done anything yet? I mean, some of the pictures dated back to last year,” Taemin said. Minho was standing behind him with an arm wrapped around his waist.

“It’s like they’re waiting for something,” Jonghyun said, distant expression on his face as he thought some more. He turned to look at Jinki before walking over to him and wrapping his arms around him. “I’ll need to talk to my father. But I want to know if you want to stay or leave.”

“I want to stay but... it’s probably safer if we leave, right? I don’t want to see you get hurt again Jjong...” Jonghyun sighed and glanced at everyone around the room. “Looks like it’s time to pack up our stuff and leave again.”

--

So they knew. They knew that we knew of their location. And yet they stayed too long anyway after coming to the decision to leave. How foolish. Jonghyun’s sentimentality for the Subject leaves him weak. And soon, the Subject will have no memory of Jonghyun left, giving him the upper hand. I suspect that will be the only way to get rid of the malicious programming.
