Sunggyu’s life slowly adjusted to a new routine. Woohyun wasn’t happy that he would be going out to the music store every morning, but Sunggyu assured him that if anything happened, he would be the first to know.
So every morning, Sunggyu woke up at ten. He cleaned himself up, had some breakfast, and warmed up on his guitar before leaving his house for the music store downtown.
Jinwoon would greet him as he walked through the door, and they would play together for a little bit until someone with a lesson scheduled would show up. Some days, Sunggyu’s schedule would be lighter than others, so he would spend some time playing with the employees at the front.
Sunggyu wandered out to the front after finishing up a lesson to see Jinwoon and the band messing around with some instruments. He noticed a repair tag on the guitar Jinwoon was holding.
“Oh hey, Sunggyu. I’m testing out this guitar before we give it back. You know this song right?” Jinwoon started to play a few notes as Sunggyu nodded, bobbing his head to the beat.
“Then come over here and sing it.” Sunggyu shook his head before limping over to them. He stood in the front, letting Jinwoon play an extended intro before starting to sing.
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Because I don't want leave you lonely
But you got to make me change my mind
Sunggyu got into the song, bringing up his cane to use as a pretend microphone.
Baby, I got your number and I know that you got mine
But you know that I called you I called too many times
You can call me baby you can call me anytime
But you got to call me
People in the store started to gather around them, but Sunggyu didn’t notice. He was lost in the song, which was coincidentally one of his favorites. Jinwoon almost laughed at how into the song he was.
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Give me one reason to stay here and I'll turn right back around
Because I don't want leave you lonely
But you got to make me change my mind
Sunggyu turned towards the crowd and started singing to them. Jinwoon always thought that Sunggyu was a good singer, but today was the day he found out that Sunggyu was a pretty good performer too.
As soon as the song was over, Sunggyu took a bow. The crowd cheered for the band before dispersing back into the store to do whatever they were doing before the impromptu performance.
“Jeeze, Sunggyu. Sometimes, I forget that you can sing. I saw some people taking videos. I wonder if you’re gonna be the next YouTube star.” Sunggyu shook his head before sitting down on an amp.
“The only think I use my YouTube account for is favoriting videos I liked. I don’t even spend that much time on the computer.”
“You should look into it. With your voice and guitar skills, YouTube will be paying for you to make videos, and I hear it’s good money.” Good money. Sunggyu let those words sink in a little bit more. He was making a fair amount giving lessons, enough to help with the groceries and medical bills. He shook his head. He didn’t want to get too greedy.
But it would definitely give him something to do all day.
--
“So how were lessons today?” Woohyun asked at the dinner table. He and Sungyeol were fighting over the last roll until Sunggyu reached under their hands and grabbed it for himself.
“Fine. We did a little performance thing today, and people seemed to like it.” Woohyun and Sungyeol gave him looks of disbelief before glaring at each other.
“Good for you, honey. You’re so talented, I wish you wouldn’t be so reluctant to share it with people,” Sunggyu’s mom said as she picked up the empty dishes to put into the sink.
“I’m not really that great, Mom.”
“You’re better than most people.” She excused herself and left the table for the boys.
“She’s right, you know,” Sungyeol said as he shoveled the last of his food
“You were amazing before you even moved here. And now, you’re even better.” Sunggyu laughed as Sungyeol reached over to grab Sunggyu’s empty plate.
“You’re going to do the dishes right? I think I’ve done them for the past month,” Sunggyu said, staring at Sungyeol.
Sungyeol stared at the dishes before frowning.
“Do I have to?”
--
Sunggyu stared off into the distance as his hands moved over the guitar strings. The song was soothing, reminding Woohyun of rain falling softly against the window. Woohyun wished he could see what was going on in Sunggyu’s mind.
A loud crash from the kitchen interrupted the song though, making both Sunggyu and Woohyun turned to see Sungyeol with a sheepish grin on his face.
“Oops. My bad.” Sunggyu rolled his eyes before resuming the melody.
“How’s school been going?” he asked Woohyun. Woohyun stared off into the distance thoughtfully before answering.
“A little bit better I guess. I don’t know whether or not I should be worried that I haven’t seen the usual fangirls around. I hope they’re not planning something.”
“I mean, how were classes and stuff? You tell me the same thing about the girls every time I ask. I don’t even care about the fangirls.” Woohyun gave Sunggyu a sheepish smile before rubbing the back of his head.
“Sorry. One track mind. But school is okay. English is totally kicking my butt right now though. Oh! Which reminds me.” Woohyun searched around for his book bag and pulled out a note from one of Sunggyu’s teachers.
“Your English teacher sends her compliments. She really liked your poem for that creative writing assignments. Says it feels like a song,” he said as Sunggyu looked over the note.
“Glad to know my teachers care. Do I even get grades, or do I just get credit for completing the course?”
“I think it’s completion. I haven’t gotten any papers back that I turn in for you.” Sunggyu sighed, plucking at the strings.
“That’s lame. So even if I half ass it, if I still get it done it’ll count.”
“But you won’t half ass it because you want to learn.” Sunggyu smiled at Woohyun.
“You know me so well.”
--
Sunggyu spent the rest of the evening teaching Woohyun the notes on the lines and spaces of the musical staff. Woohyun kept getting confused by the little notes on the page.
“Woohyun, just ignore them! I’ll teach you rhythm and stuff like that after you get these notes down.” Sunggyu drew a staff and drew in some whole notes on the lines and spaces before quizzing Woohyun on the notes.
“Oh my god. I’m never going to get this.”
“If you think this is hard, wait until you learn bass clef. Lines and spaces are completely different.”
“What? Bass clef? There are different clefs? There’s not just this Disney G thing?”
“It’s called a treble clef.”
“Clefs. What the hell is a clef anyway?”
“It tells you what pitch the music is in.” Woohyun leaned back against the chair and cried, covering his face with his hands.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to learn all of this at once,” Sunggyu said, patting Woohyun’s stomach.
“I think my brain might explode.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll probably feel the same way when you’re telling me about soccer.”
--
Friday morning, Sunggyu woke up to a good morning text from Woohyun. He even sent a long a picture of him making a kissy face at the screen. Sunggyu chuckled before kissing the screen of his phone and dragging himself out of bed.
His computer caught his eye every time he passed by it in the morning. There was a built in webcam and microphone. Maybe he could... He shook his head and went to eat breakfast.
And even then, he could still see his computer in his room. He started to chew his cereal slower in hopes of making time pass by faster.
--
Sunggyu stared at the clock above his dresser. The second hand seemed to take forever to make one full rotation. It took forever for five minutes to pass. And it look even longer for ten. Sunggyu was starting to go a little bit crazy.
He finally gave in around noon, sitting down in front of his computer with his guitar in his lap. He tuned it quickly before turning his webcam on and making sure he looked decent enough for random strangers on the internet.
Sunggyu hesisted before pressing the record button. As soon as he hit record though, his mind went blank. He stared at his webcam, chewing on his bottom lip while drumming his fingers on guitar.
“Well then. I’ve never had to talk to my computer before, so forgive me if this seems a little bit awkward. My name is Sunggyu, long time guitar player, first time video... recorder? Does that make any sense? Whatever. I’m just going to shut up and sing now. This is ’I’m Yours’ by Jason Mraz, which I know everyone does, so I may as well get it out of the way right?” Sunggyu mentally kicked himself for talking so much about nothing before starting the beginning of the song.
He sang the song like he usually did, occasionally remembering to look at the camera. It was so weird recording himself, but he had to start somewhere right? The song slowed to a stop before he grinned at the camera.
“Thanks for sitting through this video! Bye!” He reached out to stop recording and heaved a sigh when he finished. Why was this so embarrassing? He clicked the play button to watch the video again and couldn’t help but laugh at how awkward he sounded in the beginning.
The song itself sounded fine, and he could feel himself dying on the inside at the end when he had to talk again. He sighed before pulling up YouTube and going to the upload page.
He opened up the video file and let the mouse hover over the upload button. He pressed it and watched as the video started to upload.
“What? This is going to take an hour?!”
--
Sunggyu was tapping his pencil on some sheet music before glancing up at his computer screen. He typed in a description. He changed the title. And then that was it. The video was there for all of YouTube to see. He sighed as he copied the link to the video and pulled up his Facebook.
He pasted the video with the caption, ‘there. are you guys happy now?’ and pressed post before getting up from his computer and wandering into the kitchen for something to eat.
--
Sunggyu was taking a nap on the couch when his phone went off four times. He groaned as he stuffed his hand into his pockets to find his phone.
From: My Namstar
Just saw the video you posted during lunch. Sent it to all my fb friends too. It was good. Miss you.
From: Yeolie
haha you finally gave in. you sounded really good. send it to my friends. ps: myungsoo sent it to his friends too.
From: Dongwoo
damn u sounded good! remember me when u become famous k?
From: Jinwoon
saw ur vid. ur 1 step closer to stardom! sent to fb and twitter.
Sunggyu laughed before answering his texts.
To: My Namstar
i’m glad you liked it. was thinking of you the whole time. miss you too.
He sent some generic replies to the others before stuffing his phone back into his pocket and settling back into a comfortable position on the couch. He might as well finish his nap now.
--
Sunggyu resisted the urge to check his Facebook and YouTube account constantly. He hadn’t touched his computer since he uploaded the video, and he was so curious to see if there were any comments about it.
Instead, he occupied himself with dusting off some of his other guitars. He accidentally snapped a string on one of his acoustic guitars, and it whipped up and cut his hand. He winced, sighing as blood beaded on his hand.
He looked to see what string broke and laughed before sending Woohyun a text.
To: My Namstar
gdi. i just broke my g string.
He sent the text with a smirk and tried to imagine what the look on Woohyun’s face would be when he read it.
--
Woohyun stood in the locker room after practice with a towel around his neck, still in his uniform while he checked his phone. He opened up the text from Sunggyu and almost dropped his phone.
“You did what?” he said out loud, rereading the text just to make sure he read it right. He sent Sunggyu another text.
To: GyuBear
you did what?
He put his phone down to change. His shirt was off when the phone vibrated again, and he reached down to check his message.
From: GyuBear
it’s okay. don’t wrry abt it. i found another g string to replace it.
“How interesting. I didn’t know Sunggyu wore g strings.” Startled, Woohyun dropped his phone to see Dongwoo and Hoya standing right over his shoulder.
“He doesn’t! I have no idea what he’s talking about!”
“Oh, so you know what kind of underwear he usually wears?” Both Dongwoo and Hoya knew Sunggyu was talking about guitar strings, and they couldn’t help but mess with Woohyun.
“Are they leopard print?” Myungsoo asked as he walked by. Dongwoo and Hoya almost collapsed from laughter.
--
“Sunggyu?” Woohyun shoved Sungyeol out of the way as soon as he opened the door and hurried into the house.
“Uh. Okay. Sure, shove me out of the way. I don’t mind.” Sungyeol rolled his eyes and headed up the stairs, followed by Myungsoo.
“Over here,” Sunggyu said with a bright smile on his face. He waved at Woohyun from his computer and scrolled down to read through the comments on YouTube.
“Woohyun! Look! I have like, a million comments! Okay, maybe not a million, but there’s like, fifty of them already!” Woohyn leaned over Sunggyu shoulder, skimming through the comments.
“Seems like a lot of these people like your voice. A few girls are asking if you’re single,” Woohyun said, pointing out a few of them on his screen.
“Yeah. I’ve been getting a ton of comments and friend requests on Facebook too!”
“Well look at that. My Sunggyu, all famous. You’re not going to dump me for someone more famous are you?” Woohyun jutted out his bottom lip and gave Sunggyu a sad look.
“Don’t be dumb,” Sunggyu said, closing the window. “I didn’t think anyone would be interested. There’s tons of good singers and guitar players on YouTube.”
“Probably none as cute as you.” Woohyun leaned over and kissed Sunggyu with a smile on his face.
"Also. What is this about a g string?" Woohyun rolled his eyes when he heard Dongwoo and Hoya snickering out in the living room.
"What about it?"
"Well... G string?"
"Yeah. I broke it while cleaning my guitar."
"... OH. G STRING. I GET IT NOW."
