Sunggyu and Woohyun spent the following Sunday lazing around the house and doing homework. When the evening rolled around. Sungyeol bounced down the stairs and into the kitchen for dinner.

Sunggyu’s mom played around with his new phone for a little bit before giving it back to him. She took a few bites of her food and started to ask Woohyun about how he was doing in school and how soccer was going.

“First game of the season is this Friday! If you have time, you should come see me play. Sunggyu’s going to be there.”

“I am?” Sunggyu asked, looking up from his plate.

“Of course. You said you’d come to practices and games. You can’t miss the first game. Are you coming?” Woohyun asked, turning to Sungyeol. Sungyeol took a drink before nodding.

“I’ll be at the game.”

“Gonna be watching Myungsoo?” he asked with a smug look on his face. Sungyeol rolled his eyes. “I was stuck going to your practices for a week. Might as well come see an actual game right?”

Woohyun rolled his eyes and shook his head, mouthing the words ‘he’s totally going to see Myungsoo’ to Sunggyu, making him snort into his food.

--

Woohyun did the dishes after dinner with Sunggyu’s help. Well, it was more like Sunggyu did the dishes and Woohyun dried them off, but it was the thought that counted.

--

Sungyeol was working on his homework after dinner when his phone vibrated. He picked it up to see a text from Myungsoo.

'So we’re madly in love now?'

Sungyeol rolled his eyes again. He didn’t know why he said that yesterday to Woohyun. It was the first thing that popped into his mind.

’It was the first thing that popped into my head,' he replied, pushing the send button. He dropped his phone back onto the table and picked up his pencil.

A few minutes later, it vibrated again.

’Oh, so you think about it often. I see. ;]’

Sungyeol started to panic now. He pressed the call button and held his phone to his ear before looking down at his homework and frowning. Myungsoo picked up after four rings.

“Why’d you call me? I’m wittier over texting,” he said. Sungyeol could imagine the smirk on his face.

“I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”

“Wrong idea? What did you think I was thinking?” Sungyeol sighed again before dropping his pencil and rubbing his eyes.

“I’m just teasing you. By the way, you never called me like you said you would yesterday. I am very disappointed. If that’s how you’re going to be, I don’t think this thing we have will work out.” Myungsoo laughed loudly when he heard the thump over the phone as Sungyeol’s head fell over onto his desk.

“Did you just let your head fall onto your desk? Are you okay?” Myungsoo’s voice sounded more amused than concerned.

“No, I didn’t,” he said, rubbing his forehead. It’s not like Myungsoo could see him anyway.

“Okay. Just wondering then.” There was silence between the two as Sungyeol shoved away his homework and leaned back on his bed.

“So I have a question,” Sungyeol said slowly, chewing on his bottom lip.

“And I have an answer.” There was another silence.

“Well, are you going to ask me the question? Or did you just want to let me know that you have a question?” Myungsoo asked, chuckling slightly.

“Say, hypothetically, that what I said yesterday was true. What would change?” Sungyeol could feel his heart beating against his ribcage as he listened to the silence over the phone.

“Forty-two.” Sungyeol blinked.

“You’re kidding me.”

“Well. I said I had an answer. I didn’t say it would be the answer to your question.” Myungsoo laughed as he heard a second thump over the phone.

“What was that? Did you head desk again?”

“No. It wasn’t.” Sungyeol was rubbing at his knee. He jerked it into the small table on the floor in frustration.

“Okay, okay. Seriously though? If we were madly in love and just wouldn’t admit it... If we did admit it, I can’t see anything changing between us.”

“So... it wouldn’t matter if we admitted anything or not? It would still be the same?”

“I suppose. I think it would be safer if we didn’t admit anything.” Myungsoo said the last part quietly. Sungyeol frowned. Was Myungsoo afraid of something happening to him too?

“You know. I’m a little bit tougher than the average person. Whatever happened at your old school won’t happen here.”

“I guess I should tell you about what happened at my old school, huh?”

“Only if you want to.”

“Tell you what. If we win our first soccer game on Friday, I’ll take you out and tell you everything.”

“And if you guys lose?”

“If we lose, you’ll take me out, and I’ll tell you everything.”

--

Sunggyu’s days were occupied with his ukulele and texting people. Dongwoo and Hoya liked to send him random pictures of them being stupid at school. He was amazed at how they managed to not get caught with the kinds of pictures he was getting.

Woohyun would periodically text him and ask him how he was doing, what he was doing. Sunggyu’s answers were always the same, but Woohyun seemed to enjoy his replies nonetheless. Sungyeol sent Sunggyu a picture from lunch with the caption, ‘Dongwoo and Hoya hanged him for eating.’

The picture was of Woohyun sleeping at the lunch table, his tray empty. Dongwoo and Hoya were pretending to yank up his tie like they were strangling him with it. Sunggyu shook his head.

The messages continued like that through the week. Even Myungsoo sent him a few messages asking about Sungyeol’s past. Sunggyu answered things he deemed general, but when Myungsoo started to ask personal questions, Sunggyu directed him to Sungyeol.

When Friday came, Woohyun showed up at Sunggyu’s door, out of breath.

“Hey you guys, ready to go? We have to hurry.” He waved hello to Sunggyu’s mom as he called for Sungyeol to come down the stairs. Sungyeol hopped down the stairs.

“Let’s go.”

--

Coach gave the same pep talk he did every year, complete with the ‘soccer is about the fun, not about winning’ line. Woohyun rolled his eyes every time he heard Coach say that line because he knew Coach hated to lose, even if he didn’t show it.

“Hands in, let’s win!”

--

Sunggyu shielded his eyes from the bright spotlights as Sungyeol came back with some food. “Are they headed out on the field yet?” he asked, sitting down and handing Sunggyu a drink.

“No, I don’t think- Oh! I see them!” Woohyun’s team jogged out from the tunnel and made their way onto the field to stretch and warm up. A large group of girls holding signs near the bottom of the bleachers screamed, waving their flags and banners around.

Woohyun searched the bleachers for Sunggyu, grinning when he found him. He gave him a small wave before turning his attention back to the field. Some of the girls at the bottom turned around to stare at him.

Sungyeol glared back at them until they turned around again to cheer for the boys.

“Jeeze... I don’t know why you let them walk all over you. They’re just girls.”

“There are guys too. Don’t take them lightly just because they’re girls,” Sunggyu said, frowning at his leg.

“I didn’t mean it like that.” Sungyeol sighed again before turning his attention back to the field. He watched as Woohyun leaned over to whisper something to Myungsoo. Myungsoo turned around and peeked into the bleachers to see Sungyeol. He waved to him with a small smile before turning back around.

“Oh. Is the game starting?” Sunggyu asked. The two of them looked around.

“Is the other team here?”

“I think that’s them over there,” Sunggyu said, looking

“No, they’re wearing the same color jerseys.” The two of them sighed. This was going to be a very long game.

--

Woohyun’s team won one to zero.

“I think you’re going to have to explain a little more about soccer to me,” Sunggyu said as soon as Woohyun came out of the locker room. Woohyun grinned at him.

“Well. We won, and I scored the winning goal,” he said as he wrapped an arm around Sunggyu’s waist.

“I figured that much.” Sunggyu rolled his eyes as Woohyun planted a kiss on his cheek.

“Come on, let’s get out of here.” Woohyun grabbed Sunggyu’s hand and dragged him off to the parking lot.

“Wait, where’s Sungyeol?” Sunggyu glanced back in the direction they came.

“He left with Myungsoo. They said something about grabbing a bite to eat after the game and talk about stuff.”

“Sounds like a date to me.” Woohyun smirked, squeezing Sunggyu’s hand. As they got into the parking lot, there was a group of girls waiting for him, holding banners with his name on it. They all screamed and rushed him at the same time.

“Whoa,” Sunggyu and Woohyun got separated from the jostling. Sunggyu got pushed to the back of the crowd as Woohyun tried to escape the crowd. One of the girls pushed Sunggyu back, and he felt his knee buckle underneath him.

He gave out a cry of pain, falling to the ground, holding his knee.

“Sunggyu!” Woohyun shoved through the girls towards him, kneeling down on the ground. The girls went quiet as Woohyun looked him over.

He helped him up while Sunggyu winced as pain shot up and down his leg.

“I hope you’re happy,” Woohyun said as coldly as he could at the crowd of girls before taking Sunggyu to his car. The girls shifted around uncomfortably.

--

Sungyeol and Myungsoo stopped at a small coffee shop downtown. They sat in a secluded corner sipping on drink and talking about the game.

“Sunggyu and I had no idea what was going on the entire time.” Myungsoo smiled and shook his head.

“Then why did you come? You were probably bored out of your minds.”

“We came to support you guys. We cheered pretty hard when Woohyun scored that goal.”

“That’s the object of the game,” Myungsoo said before sipping on his drink, earning a punch from Sungyeol.

The mood died down a little bit as Myungsoo stirred his drink, staring off into the distance. Sungyeol spun his cup around in his hands, staring at the coffee like it was a foreign object.

“His name is Sungjong.” Sungyeol looked up.

“We were friends at my old school. He was a grade lower than me, sweet kid. He got mistaken for a girl a lot.” Myungsoo sighed and sat back in his chair.

“I was like Woohyun. Popular. A lot of girls liked me, but I knew about their tendencies and kept my distance away from people. Sungjong wouldn’t ever leave me alone though. I kept telling him why, and he told me that I shouldn’t be afraid to make friends just because of a few crazy girls. He was... He was just so persistent. So I gave in.” It was Sungyeol’s turn to stare off into the distance. He could guess what happened from there.

“So we started hanging out. Maybe I should emphasize that he’s very girlish. He was very girlish.” Sungyeol snorted.

“Okay. I get it. He was girly.”

“My fangirls mistook him as a girl. They ridiculed him, teased him, bullied him. But the stupid thing was, he still insisted on being friends. He came to school beaten up once, and it was the last time I let him go home alone.” Sungyeol nodded quietly. At least Myungsoo was smart enough to do something about it.

“It went on for a while. He told me to ignore them and that they were just jealous that he managed to annoy me enough to become my friend.” Myungsoo stopped for a moment, smiling faintly at a fond memory.

“Then what happened?”

“I just snapped one day. I saw this guy push him into the lockers and make some comment about how he was soft like a girl. He grabbed Sungjong’s face and almost kissed him until Sungjong kicked him. He punched Sungjong across the face, and the next thing I knew, the guy was on the floor beneath me, and I was punching him. I remember someone telling me to stop, and there was so much blood, but I just... I couldn’t.” Myungsoo closed his eyes and smiled a dry smile.

“And after I was done, I said something like, ‘There. Maybe I rearranged your face well enough so those idiot fangirls will follow you instead of me.’ I broke his nose. His jaw. And popped out one of his eyeballs.” Sungyeol winced before looking at Myungsoo in horror.

“His family didn’t press charges since my parents agreed to pay his medical bill. They withdrew me from school, and we moved here.” Myungsoo took another sip of his drink before looking over at Sungyeol.

“Change your opinion of me yet?” Sungyeol was silent as he stared back at Myungsoo. Myungsoo could see the cogs working in his brain. Would he really be okay if Sungyeol said he was scared of him and didn’t want to be friends anymore?

“No. I haven’t changed my opinion. Do you still keep in touch with Sungjong?” Sungyeol asked quietly.

“Yeah. We exchange emails. He’s home schooled now.”

“I’m glad you told me.”

“Yeah. Don’t get on my bad side, or I’ll mess you up too.” Sungyeol shook his head. He didn’t understand how Myungsoo could joke about something like that.

“Well, you’ll be glad to know I’m pretty durable. I get sick every now and then, but I don’t take crap from anyone.” Sungyeol pointed his finger at Myungsoo.

“You take crap from me. I don’t know how you stand me,” Myungsoo said with a playful grin on his face. The fact that Sungyeol was still sitting in front of him and cracking jokes made his heart go into overdrive. He took another sip of his drink.

“You idiot. You got foam on your face.” Myungsoo reached up to his face to wipe at the corners of his mouth.

“You missed. It’s right...” Sungyeol leaned forward over the table and swiped his tongue over the top of Myungsoo’s lip.

“... Here.” Myungsoo blinked at him.

“I saw it in a drama and thought it was cute. Though, I think if I kissed you, you might’ve socked me,” Sungyeol said with a smirk on his face.

“You never know,” he said quietly.

--

They sat quietly the entire bus ride home, holding hands. Myungsoo rubbed his thumb back and forth over the back of Sungyeol’s hand as they watched the lights in the stores pass by.

The walk from the bus stop to Myungsoo’s house was quiet too, but they walked much closer to each other. The street lamps glowed a strange yellow as they walked down the sidewalk together.

“What time is it?” Sungyeol asked as they reached the white fence surrounding Myungsoo’s yard. Myungsoo glanced into his house through the screen. His mother left the door open for him.

“Late. I don’t think I want you walking home this late at night,” Myungsoo said, opening up the gate. He didn’t let go of Sungyeol’s hand as he walked inside. Sungyeol got dragged inside with a confused look on his face.

“Stay over tonight.”

“Would your parents mind?”

“No. My mom thinks we’re already dating.”

“Wouldn’t that be more reason for her to not want me to stay over?”

“She loves you. She’s on a mission to feed you until you fatten up a bit.”

“Are we dating?”

“Do words make it official? Does it change our feelings for each other?”

“That’s how society works these days. And it doesn’t, I guess.”

“I’ll deny it if anyone asks.”

“I will too. I don’t think Woohyun would ever let me live it down.”

Myungsoo smiled as he opened the screen door and closed it behind Sungyeol.

“Mom? Are you still up?”

“Yes, in here.” Myungsoo poked his head into the living room.

“Is it okay if Sungyeol stays over tonight?”

“Oh, he’s here?”

“Hi, Mrs. Kim,” Sungyeol said from behind Myungsoo.

“Oh. It’s fine with me.” She gave the two of them a smile before waving them off.

“Come on.”

“I know where your room is.”

“I know. I’m going to have a tough time trying to find clothes that fit you.”

“That’s okay. I can just sleep in basketball shorts and my t-shirt.”

--

When the two boys were settled in Myungsoo’s room on the floor, Myungsoo turned to face Sungyeol with a smirk on his face before he yawned.

“Oh. I guess there’s something else you should know about me,” he whispered. Sungyeol murmured something sleepily.

“I strip in my sleep. And I tend to strip others too, if they’re in the room.” Sungyeol’s eyes opened wide as he turned to face Myungsoo with furrowed eyebrows.

“So it was your fault that we kept ending up naked on that beach trip! I knew it! You dirty little liar! Who else knew?!”

“Everyone else knew,” Myungsoo said with a laugh.

“God damn it! Those jerks! I swear I’m going to kill someone some day.” Myungsoo frowned at his choice of words.

“Oh, don’t give me that look you liar.”

“Whatever, it’s not like you care now whether or not we wind up naked together under the covers.”

“I have principles! We haven’t even kissed yet!” Myungsoo closed his eyes and leaned forward to plant a small kiss on Sungyeol’s lips.

“There. So it should be okay if we wake up naked tomorrow. Good night, Sungyeol.” Myungsoo flipped over to the other side, ignoring the shocked look on Sungyeol’s face.

“Yah! You idiot!” Sungyeol hit his back but Myungsoo refused to move, a pleased smile on his face. Sungyeol sighed and scooted closer to Myungsoo, throwing his arm over his waist and pulled him closer. Myungsoo shifted until he fit comfortably with Sungyeol.

--

“Looks like Sungyeol isn’t coming home tonight.” Sunggyu glanced up at the clock before checking his phone.

“Oh. He’s spending the night at Myungsoo’s.”

“I swear to you the two of them are dating.”

“Maybe they’re trying to mess with your mind again, Woohyun.” Woohyun frowned. That sounded like a good explanation too, but he liked his theory better.

“How’s your leg?” Woohyun turned his attention back to Sunggyu’s leg. He had it propped up on his bed, occasionally reaching down to massage it.

“Better. The pills have kicked in.”

“God, I swear those stupid girls...”

“I don’t think it was on purpose. They were just excited to see you.”

“That’s the thing with you. You’re too nice to them. They crippled you!”

“None of those girls specifically did. And if there’s at least one girl with some sanity that tried to defend our relationship, then maybe there are more, and they’re just too scared to say something. I think it’s unfair to lump them all together as crazies. Besides, you said it was the same girls that were following you, right?”

“They’ve been on the down low this week, but I still see them around. It’s unnerving. They know everything about me.” Woohyun laid his head on Sunggyu’s lap and closed his eyes with a sigh.

“I don’t wanna go home. Let me stay over.”

“Okay. Shower first, you smell bad.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“I’ll see if I have clothes that fit you. You’re a little more well built than I am.”

“You realize that by letting me stay over tonight, I’m going to start staying over a lot more often now.”

“Is that a bad thing?” Sunggyu asked with a smile, tracing Woohyun’s jaw. Woohyun’s smile made his heart skip a beat.
