“Where are my keys...” Sunggyu patted his pockets, feeling his wallet in his back pocket but not his keys. He searched around his room for them, under his pillows, on his desk, in his nightstand. He even went as far as getting onto the floor and looking under his bed.
“What the hell. Where are my keys?” He stepped outside into the kitchen and glanced into the bowl where his mom usually kept her keys. His mom’s keys were there. He stared at them. His mom left for work hours ago.
He heard Sungyeol’s voice upstairs grow louder as he opened up his door and headed down the stairs, fully dressed to go out. “Uh huh... yeah, okay. I’ll let him know. Your mom accidentally took your keys this morning. She was running late,” Sungyeol said, covering up the bottom half of his phone to tell Sunggyu before bringing the phone back to his ear.
“Yeah, I just told him... Okay... Have a good day at work!” Sungyeol hung up his phone and stuffed it into his pocket. “She’s glad you’re finally getting a phone so she can reach you for when this stuff happens.” Sungyeol rounded into the kitchen to munch on something as Sunggyu grabbed his mom’s keys and stuck them into his pocket.
“You’re going out today?” Sunggyu asked, leaning against the living room couch.
“Yeah. Hanging out with Myungsoo to work on a project. Projects on the first week, can you believe it? I think you have it easy just doing paperwork all the time.”
“You and Myungsoo... You two have been hanging out together a lot lately. And doing a lot of whispering to each other.” Sungyeol just continued to eat his apple, not meeting eyes with Sunggyu. Sunggyu narrowed his eyes at him suspiciously.
“Is there... Are you two...” A loud knock on the door interrupted his questioning as Sungyeol blew by him to open the door.
“Woohyun! How are you this morning?” Sungyeol asked loudly with a smile on his face. Woohyun gave him a weird look before walking inside.
“What’s wrong with him? I’ve never seen him so happy to see me before.” Woohyun glanced back over his shoulder, furrowing his eyebrows at Sungyeol before turning to Sunggyu with a smile on his face.
“Ready to go?” Woohyun spun his keys with one hand while helping Sunggyu up with his other one.
“Yeah,” Sunggyu said, looking around for his cane. Sungyeol threw it to him from the door. “Oh, Sungyeol. Do you need a ride to Myungsoo’s?” Woohyun looked from Sunggyu to Sungyeol.
“You’re going over to Myungsoo’s today? What for?”
“Project.”
“Right, a project. I don’t really know if... I can take you. Well. I can. I guess I can drive slow and take the neighborhood route instead of the big street.”
“What? What do you mean you don’t know if you can take him?” Woohyun opened the door for Sunggyu to see. In front of his house was a silver convertible. With two seats.
Sungyeol stared at the car. “Where am I supposed to sit in that thing?”
--
Sunggyu was sure that this was the only way Woohyun was every going to be able to get back at Sungyeol without making it too obvious. Sungyeol sat on the back of the car, gripping the top of the seats until his knuckles turned white while Woohyun sped through the neighborhood with a devious grin on his face.
They stopped in front of Myungsoo’s house to see him out in the front yard watering plants, his dog chewing on some rope. Sungyeol hopped out of the car and collapsed, holding onto the fence for support.
“Nice car,” Myungsoo called, eyeing the shiny convertible.
“Thanks. I don’t usually take it out, and I wouldn’t have if I knew I had to drive someone else besides Sunggyu today.” Woohyun peeked over his sunglasses to see Sungyeol standing up, his legs still wobbling slightly.
“Never again. Next time, I’ll brave walking.”
“Don’t be so dramatic,” Myungsoo said. Sungyeol opened the fence and stepped inside. Dog abandoned his rope and ran over to Sungyeol to run circles around him while barking.
“You have no idea what I just suffered through. Just. Be quiet.” Myungsoo grinned at him before turning to waving to Woohyun and Sunggyu.
“Enjoy your day!” Woohyun and Sunggyu blinked as the two of them stood side by side, waving in sync.
“Uh... Let’s get out of here before they start messing with our heads again.”
--
The weather was beautiful that morning. Sunggyu closed his eyes and let the wind and sun take over his senses. “It’s always nice when we go out,” he said absentmindedly.
“It is. It’s like the world approves.” Both of them laughed as Woohyun pulled into town. Sunggyu felt his face cool as Woohyun turned into a parking garage. He winced when the tires screeched and echoed around him.
“Sorry.” Woohyun found a parking spot and turned off the engine before hopping out of the car to open the door for Sunggyu.
“You’re not going to put the top up or anything?”
“No one’s dumb enough to steal a car like this.”
--
“So tell me why we’re wasting our Saturday stalking them around town like this?” Dongwoo asked, hiding behind a news paper on a bench.
“I told you. We’re on the lookout for the fanclub. You’ve heard what they’ve been saying. Look, they’re headed into the phone store,” Sungyeol said, elbowing Dongwoo.
Dongwoo peeked over his news paper and saw the pair walk into the phone store. “Hopefully, Hoya makes a good excuse about being in the phone store.”
--
Sunggyu took his time looking at the shiny phones in the cases. “Hey, Woohyun. What kind of phone do you have?” Woohyun glanced through the case before pointing it out.
“Why? So we can have matching phones?” he asked, bumping shoulders with Sunggyu.
“So I can know what phone not to get.” Woohyun gave him an indignant look while Sunggyu laughed. Hoya was on the other side of the store, making gagging faces into the case he was pretending to look at.
“Can I help you?” Hoya looked up to see a salesman giving him a strange look.
“Oh, no. I’m fine. You can go help them though,” he said, jerking his thumb over his shoulder. The man’s eyes moved over to Sunggyu and Woohyun before he left Hoya alone.
The bell at the door jingled as a group of girls walked in giggling, heading straight for the phone charms. Hoya looked up and recognized a few of them as students from their school.
“Isn’t that Woohyun?”
“Oh my god! It is!”
“Who is he with?”
“Is it that Sunggyu guy? I thought he withdrew from school.”
“I don’t know, they look pretty friendly with each other...”
“I heard they were dating.”
“What? No way!” Woohyun heard the whispering and turned around to stare at the girls that just walked in. They hushed themselves and hurried to crowd around the phone charms. Luckily, Sunggyu was distracted by the salesman and playing around with phones.
Sunggyu turned to ask Woohyun something but saw him staring at the girls at the charms. “Woohyun? Did you hear me?”
Woohyun snapped out of his daze and turned back to Sunggyu with a smile. “Sorry, what?”
“The phone. This one.” Woohyun’s smile got bigger when he saw Sunggyu holding the same model as his.
The salesman rang them up at the front counter while Hoya kept his head down and his eyes on the girls. Woohyun furrowed his eyebrows when he noticed someone familiar. Hoya turned his head and caught Woohyun’s eyes.
Woohyun’s eyes narrowed as he opened his mouth to say something but Hoya shook his head before lowering it again.
“Woohyun? Did you see someone you know?”
“I... No, I didn’t. Are you hungry? I know a nice cafe near here. I can teach you how to use your phone over lunch.” Sunggyu laughed as he took the bag from the salesman.
“Sounds like a plan. Did you want to look at anything else?”
“No, let’s go,” Woohyun said slowly, turning to open the door for Sunggyu.
--
As soon as they left, Hoya turned his attention back to the girls around the charms. He moved a little bit closer to them, pretending to look at phones.
“Ugh. I don’t know why Woohyun is hanging out with him.”
“It looks like he just bought him a new phone too.”
“He’s just using Woohyun so he can buy him things. God, I hate him.”
“I don’t know guys, Woohyun looked pretty happy with him... Maybe you guys are just jumping to conclusions....” Hoya watched as the other girls turned to glare at the one that just talked.
“What? What are you talking about? Do you even like Woohyun?”
“Well, yeah, but if he’s happy, shouldn’t we be happy for him instead of trying to destroy his relationship?”
“Listen. You’ve already got one strike against you for talk to him alone, especially in the locker room. Don’t get in the way.” The girl fell silent before sighing.
--
Sungyeol and Dongwoo watched as Sunggyu and Woohyun exited the store. They walked together down the street and disappeared into the crowd. A few minutes later, Hoya exited the phone store. He glanced both ways before running across the street to where they were sitting.
“Woohyun saw me, but he didn’t say anything. Did you see the girls that walked into the store?”
“Yeah. Why?” Sungyeol asked.
“Woohyun fangirls.”
“Good grief, they’re everywhere.”
“I don’t think they were following him though. They just happened to be there. They sound as lovely as ever, but on the bright side, Sunggyu has sympathizers! There was this girl trying to convince them to leave them alone because they should be happy that Woohyun is happy.”
“Well, that’s nice. Do you know where they’re headed next?”
“Yeah. There’s a cafe near here that Woohyun likes to eat at. They know him by name and everything.” Sungyeol took the details and sent a text to Myungsoo.
Myungsoo sent him a text back along with a picture.
Come join me for lunch then. The picture attached was of Myungsoo sitting in one of the cafe chairs with a smile on his face.
“Looks like I’ll be joining Myungsoo for lunch. Thanks for coming guys.”
“What? We spend our Saturday morning stalking with you, and you’re not even going to feed us?”
“What? Do I look like Woohyun to you?”
--
Myungsoo and Sungyeol sat off in the corner of the cafe inside, close enough to see Sunggyu and Woohyun on the patio outside, but far enough so that they wouldn’t be noticed.
“I don’t get why I have to face away from them. This was my idea,” Sungyeol grumbled.
“Because you’re tall and can block me if they happen to turn this way. I can’t hide you if they spot you. Duh.” Sungyeol scowled at Myungsoo before tearing a small piece of bread and throwing it at him.
“Yum. Food.” He picked up the piece of bread and ate it, smirking at Sungyeol.
“Joke’s on you. I bit off of that piece.”
“And I’ve seen you mostly naked. Anything else?”
“Shut up.”
--
Sunggyu was having fun exploring his phone. Woohyun taught him how to add numbers into it, adding his first.
“What did you save the name as?” Woohyun asked as Sunggyu played around with the touch screen.
“Namstar.” Sunggyu turned his phone around for Woohyun to see. Woohyun laughed before taking the phone away from him and pressing edit.
“Hey! Don’t change it!”
“I’m not, I’m just making it better. There.” Woohyun gave it back to him, and Sunggyu could see the three hearts added next to his name.
“You dork.” Sunggyu barely had time to play around some more before Woohyun took the phone back.
“Actually, here. I’ll put in Dongwoo and Hoya’s numbers too.”
“Oh yeah. Then I can add in Sungyeol’s.”
“Wait. You know Sungyeol’s number but not mine?”
“I’ve never had a need to know your number.”
“What? Why not? I’m your boyfriend!”
“Well... You’re always there so... I don’t really need to call you, do I?” Woohyun blinked at him rapidly before shaking his head. “I guess...”
“But now that I have a phone,” Sunggyu said, “I don’t want you texting me from class. You need to pay attention in school.”
“Whatever! Everyone texts in class! Just. Don’t argue with me. Don’t. Nope. Don’t argue.” Woohyun cut off Sunggyu every time he tried to talk until Sunggyu threw his hands up in the air in defeat.
“I can put different ringtones and stuff on here later, and set a special one for me. Oh! Let’s take a picture!” Woohyun scooted his chair over to Sunggyu and held his phone up, holding onto the camera button.
Sunggyu smiled as Woohyun turned, closing his eyes and pressing his lips to Sunggyu’s cheek and taking the picture. Sunggyu laughed at the picture, making it his background.
Woohyun pulled out his own phone and held it up. “Do me, do me!” Sunggyu grinned, closing his eyes and giving Woohyun a kiss on the cheek. Woohyun smiled and set it as his background, holding his phone next to Sunggyu’s.
“We’re cute.”
--
“They’re going to make me throw up my lunch,” Sungyeol said, making a disgusted face and gagging noises.
“No one told you to look. I can keep an eye on them too- Wait.” Myungsoo leaned to the side of Sungyeol, his expression turning serious. Sungyeol glanced over his shoulder.
“Oh god. It’s the girls from the phone store.”
“What do they want?”
--
The pair was enjoying lunch when shadows cast over their table. Woohyun turned around and paled slightly. It was the girls from the phone store.
“Oh, Woohyun. What a pleasant surprise!” Sunggyu chewed slowly, looking from Woohyun to the girls with cautious eyes.
“Hi,” Woohyun said, drumming his fingers on the table.
“Do you come here a lot?” one of the girls asked.
“Yeah, I guess you could say that...” 'Why ask what you already know?' he thought to himself.
“Who’s...” One of the girls glanced at Sunggyu.
“My boyfriend. Some of guys might know each other,” Woohyun said with a strained smile though gritted teeth.
“Woohyun...” Sunggyu was nervous now, and he didn’t like the looks he was getting from some of the girls. They looked all too familiar.
“Well, we can see that you’re busy. Maybe we’ll talk another time. Bye, Woohyun. Bye, Sunggyu.” They all trooped inside with an nasty glare towards Sunggyu.
“They do know my name,” Sunggyu said quietly. “Some of them might’ve...” He glanced down at his leg while Woohyun ground his teeth together angrily.
“Hey, they’re gone. Don’t let them ruin a perfectly good date.” Sunggyu grabbed Woohyun’s hand and moved his fingers back and forth.
“Right, right. I just... I can’t catch a break, can I?”
--
Both Sungyeol and Myungsoo were sitting on the edge of their seats, ready to spring into action just in case something happened. There were words exchanged, and Sunggyu looked nervous, but the girls left them alone for the most part.
They sat down at a large table, chattering away.
“Who does he think he is? Didn’t he learn his lesson last time?”
“Don’t worry girls, we’ll take care of him soon enough.” One of the girls frowned, turning around to look at Sunggyu and Woohyun preparing to leave.
“We really can’t just leave him alone? He’s not hurting anyone, and Woohyun is happy...” The main girl glared at her before leaning over the table and slapping her across the face.
Myungsoo and Sungyeol jumped in their seats, looking at each other in horror.
“Shut up. If I hear anything else from you one more time, you’ll end up worse than Sunggyu.” The girl swallowed and nodded, holding her face. Myungsoo could see the red palm print appearing on her face.
“Good god. They’re even abusive with each other... Let’s get out of here.” They each paid for their part of the check before leaving. As they passed by the girls’ table, Myungsoo turned to give them all a cold glare as he walked outside.
The main girl just gave him a weird look.
“What’s his problem?”
“He looks familiar. Doesn’t he go to our school?”
“Oh! He’s that new transfer student on the soccer team with Woohyun. Myungsoo or something.”
“I’ve heard a lot of rumors about him.”
“Ooo, like what?”
“Like at his old school, he was so popular, he couldn’t get close to anyone because his fans were so crazy.”
“Maybe we should get in contact with them to see what they did right,” the main girl said with a smirk.
“I don’t know about that. Something happened to one of his friends, and he snapped and almost killed someone. It might just be a rumor though...”
--
“You know. I’ve heard a few rumors about you,” Sungyeol said as they sat together on the bus. They took the bus to get into town and caught the same bus to head home. The bus stop was about a ten minute walk from Myungsoo’s house.
“Really? What kind of rumors?” Myungsoo stared out of the window, watching the buildings pass by.
“Interesting ones. Some scary ones.”
“Like what?” This time, Myungsoo turned to look at Sungyeol. Sungyeol pursed his lips. He wasn’t quite sure how to ask Myungsoo these things. He didn’t really know too much about his past, and if Myungsoo didn’t bring it up, he probably didn’t want to talk about it.
“You were an ulzzang.”
“True.”
“You were forced to move from your old school.”
“True. Is there a rumor about why?” Sungyeol glanced at Myungsoo and twiddled his fingers.
“Maybe.” Myungsoo smiled sadly before leaning back in his seat.
“It’s true too,” he said quietly. Sungyeol nodded, soaking in the piece of information. Myungsoo looked over at Sungyeol. Sungyeol could see the sadness in his eyes.
“It doesn’t make me think any differently of you. I probably would’ve done the same thing, if I were there to see what was going on with Sunggyu. If you ever wanna talk about it... I’m here for you too.”
--
The walk from the bus stop to Myungsoo house was quiet. The hands bumped together until their fingers somehow wound themselves together. Neither boy said anything about it, but it was comfortable.
--
Sungyeol was sprawled on top of Myungsoo fast asleep in the yard when Woohyun came by to pick him up.
Woohyun sighed before taking out his phone to take a picture. “So cute.” He stuffed his phone into his pocket before nudging Sungyeol with his foot.
“Yah. Working hard on that project, I see.” Sungyeol groaned and rolled over, groaning again when he fell off of Myungsoo and onto the ground.
“Took a break. Mostly done,” he mumbled sleepily. Myungsoo took in a deep breath before frowning and opening his eyes slowly.
“Oh. Woohyun. Back already?”
“Alright. Just tell me already. Are you two dating?”
“No.”
“No.”
“You’re pretty touchy feely for two people not dating.”
“You were touchy feely with Sunggyu before you two started dating.”
“Well I liked him. So does that mean you two like each other?”
“We’re madly in love and just won’t admit it to each other. Why all the questions? Let’s go. I”ll call you later,” Sungyeol said, getting up and sleepily shoving Woohyun towards the car.
“Wait, what?”
“Nothing, just go. Bye, Myungsoo.” Myungsoo waved at him from the ground and groaned when his dog jumped onto his chest, wagging his tail.
