Not My Finest Five Hours
I taught (I think) myself a useful lesson about momentum, ground clearance and decision making skills. Yesterday afternoon the sky was shaping in a way favorable to a beautiful sunset. Winter Tour
Recent repairs to the Jeep have it functioning as it should. Even the heater works now. A good idea was to take a tour again of a couple of local mountains. Most of the roads are closed and one cannot make it the top without snow-specific gear, but it was to go as far as we could. The sun came out a few times and the sights were beautiful.

Sonoma Lake
After three failed attempts, we made it to Sonoma Lake. We discovered many wrong turns made during previous efforts were due to trails that do not look like trails. Sometimes a trail would be a stream of rocks, much like a dry riverbed on the side of a mountain. Many trails were merely bumpy and rutted, well within the limitations of the dune ( Read more... ) -
Colin Ross Concert
Saturday night went saw Colin Ross perform at The Martin Hotel in Winnemucca. He entertained us with a stunning variety of music and storytelling, from traditional Irish music to ragtime, boogie woogie, jazz and old country music. Most of his music was original content or improvisation, but he belted out an awesome cover of I'm So Lonesome I ( Read more... ) -
Lamoille Canyon
While in Elko to photograph the Lamoille Hill Climb of 2012, we explored Lamoille Canyon. At almost 9,000 feet elevation, it is the gateway to hiking trails to explore the Ruby Mountains and the East Humboldt Range.

Hinkey Summit
We finally returned to Hinkey Summit, actually making it up and over the top with no flat tires this time. We had a very enjoyable drive and the altitude (about 8,000 feet) provided a welcome relief from the heat in town.

Winnemucca Mountain
I finally made to the top of Winnemucca Mountain. It's in my backyard and it's taken too long, but I had vehicle mishaps during my previous attempt. I first wanted a close up view of the famous "W" formed many years ago of stacked rocks. It's a landmark viewable from anywhere in the valley.

4th Of July Parade
Most of the city of Winnemucca showed up for the 4th of July Parade. The parade consisted of the usual entries, minus celebrities and veterans.

85mm Test
The 85mm f1.8 G arrived today and right when I got home I took it across the street for a few test shots. This one's a winner. It's sharp, reasonably fast focusing and has good color and contrast. As with the construction of all the latest G lenses, this is a little larger but much lighter than the regular D lens.
