I finally made to the top of Winnemucca Mountain. It's in my backyard and it's taken too long, but I had vehicle mishaps during my previous attempt. I first wanted a close up view of the famous "W" formed many years ago of stacked rocks. It's a landmark viewable from anywhere in the valley.
The trail is easy here to get to the "W", but it gets narrow and rutted when climbing. The road directly under the "W" can be seen here as a horizontal line.
This doesn't show the rutted areas, but it is typical, This is directly under the "W".
The buggy was totally up to the task and in fact appears to be doing a Captain Morgan on a small rock.
Recently, some kids painted the rocks half blue and half yellow, the colors of the local high school.
The view from this vantage point shows some of the twisty trails around the side of the mountain.
Later we went around the other side to make it to the very top of the mountain, where transmitting equipment is sited.
It was a blast to drive up this direction with several hairpin turns and few straight sections. The peak is about 6,600 feet.
Sheesh, I look more like my dad every day. Behind me lies the entire city of Winnemucca.
A view from the backside of Winnemucca Mountain. In the distance can be seen the famous sand dunes. That's where I should take the buggy, It's a very popular recreation area for sand rails and four wheelers, but doesn't see many old school dune buggies.
