Well, I definitely wanked on about the social structure of the Iki at boring length on other "world-building" tagged posts, and god knows how much is in the glossary at the back of the book. And yeah - I just finished reading "The Language Instinct" and had to remind myself that a kneejerk hate reaction to mentions of evo psych aren't helpful - the field itself is useful even if it is co-opted by reactionary fucktards who think that Basic Human Universals are "the values of middle class white America in the 1950s".
I would also recommend George Alec Effinger for socially-conscious/acceptible sci fi, "When Gravity Fails" is a remarkable book.
