PROLOGUE   |   Chapter 1   |   Chapter 2   |    Chapter 3

Koki bit his lip as he let his fingers tap the wooden table of their living room. His feet are starting to get numb already, pained from being in the same position for almost half an hour. Yuichi just sat quietly next to Koki hoping that the older Tanaka would not make Koki quit. He swore he’d never forgive himself if he looses another friend just because he is from a yakuza clan.

“So to make it simple, you are telling me that you work for one of the most influential underground mafia mobs of Japan and that you are the bodyguard of this man who happens to be the next leader of their clan?”

Koki forced a smile as he tilted his head to the right before nodding hesitantly.

A large hand landed on Koki’s shaved head. “Bakayarou!!! Why didn’t you just say so? I thought you’ve been lurking dark alleys selling your body!!!”

Yuichi’s eyes widened… not the reaction he expected from Koki’s father. When he finally processed the whole statement, it was only then that he burst into a fit of laughter.

“It’s not funny.” Koki grimaced at Yuichi before turning back to his father. “You dirty old man, why do you keep insisting on that issue huh?!” he scowled at his father’s face.

“Maa, maa~ Nakamaru-kun… Please bear with my son. He has this rash attitude towards most people… and also being such an idiot some times but I know this kid. He is really responsible and dependable so please give him you utmost tolerance.” The old man bowed his head and startled Yuichi.

“Anou, Tanaka-san… there is no need for that. I am actually the one who gives him quite a lot of trouble. And please… you can drop the formalities, Yuichi is fine.” He smiled awkwardly.

“But you’re still his boss and that’s his job… so just please have a good relationship then.” He gave a light tap on Yuichi’s shoulder as he finally stood to leave.

Koki hissed as he dusted off his suit, “Why am I always the bad guy?” he stood to follow his father into their small shop. “Pops, we’re staying here for the night.” Koki informed the latter when they were inside.

“Ja, you should go to the market then. We should at least serve something decent for your visitor.”

“Hai. Wakatta. I’ll go later. I think I’ll take a shower first. Could you look out for him for a while? I won’t take long… I just have to wash off the itch this suit is giving me.”

“Uhm…” the older Tanaka nodded as he folded a neatly pressed shirt and wrapped it in a plastic. Koki was about to step out when he called his son again. “Hey…”

Koki turned back immediately, “Yeah?”

“Be careful… I mean with your job. We enjoy when we watch them in movies. But you’re in a real-life situation now. Avoid getting hurt in any way.”

Koki smiled and scratched his head. “Yeah. Of course.” He looked down then back up to look at his father. “Thanks Pops.”

The older Tanaka nodded and pushed Koki out of the shop. “Now, get moving. You have a big kid over there to take care of.” He nudged Koki to Yuichi’s direction and found the Young Master looking around their small home.

The older Tanaka sauntered to Yuichi’s direction and started to chat with him while Koki remembered to do an important task.

~**~

Koki flipped his phone and dialed Mori’s number. “Mori… This is Tanaka.”

“Damn, where are you? Waka escaped again! I suppose you’re looking for him now. Find him before Boss finds out!”

“Hey, relax. He’s with me. Can I talk to Boss?”

“Oi, what the hell are you thinking?”

“Just let me talk to him. This is very important.”

“Fine. Hold on a sec.”

Koki waited and gathered his thoughts as to how he would tell this matter to the Boss.

“Tanaka?”

The familiar voice spoke from the other line.

“Sir. Anou… I have a favor to ask…”

“What about?”

“Right now, Young Master is here with me at our house. I want to ask for permission to let him stay for a night or two here. He tried to escape again this morning. He is bored inside the mansion so he ran away again. Sir… I was just thinking… Maybe, he needs a breath of different air. So I ask you to let him stay here for a while. I will take full responsibility and I promise to take him home before the week ends. Just this time Boss. Onegaishimasu.”

There was a long moment of silence and Koki had been hoping for a positive response.

“Ja… I leave it to you Tanaka. I’ll take your words on this.”

Koki sighed in relief. “Arigatou Gozaimahita!!!” the other line hung up immediately after and Koki clenched his fist, “Yosh!”

~**~

“Aniki,” Koki started and Yuichi immediately glared at him closing the photo album in his hand with a loud thump. Koki just grinned in return. “I’m going to the market to find something we can cook for dinner. Wanna come with me?”

Yuichi’s face brightened up at the mention of going somewhere else. “Sure…” he was beside Koki in an instant and they made their way outside.

Koki grabbed his bike (which he missed so much) and was about to get on it but stopped midway when he found Yuichi pouting at him like a child.

“What?”

“I wanna ride your bike.” He smiled in way that implies Koki can’t refuse.

They made their way to the market with Koki walking beside the grinning Yuichi who was now on his bike.

~**~

Koki was getting annoyed. He should’ve just left Yuichi at home in the first place. Everytime he would pick something to purchase, Yuichi will always reject it and replace it with his own choice.

“I am the cook here so I know what ingredient is fresh from what is not.” Then he would give that cheeky grin at Koki.

But somehow, it made Koki happy. Seeing Yuichi all cheerful and not grumpy at all. He realized that the other was happy interacting with different people and the eagerness to explore the outside world.

Occasionally, Yuichi would grab him by the arm just to make him buy this and that. “Let’s make a salad. I’ll teach you how.” Koki can’t help but nod with a smile. Going to the wet and noisy market was never this fun.

“Ne, I’ll cook for your dad.” Yuichi suggested as they made their way back, the sun was close to setting and Koki was already tired from walking, not to mention the fact that he was the one carrying all the meat and vegetables they bought in the market.

“Sure. At least that old man would be able to eat a delicious meal once in his life.” He sat on a bench at the nearby park and dropped the plastic bags he was carrying. Koki stretched his arms and massaged his feet to soothe the tired muscles.

Yuichi went in circles with Koki’s bike, hovering just near where Koki sat. “I envy you. You have a very kind and understanding father.” Yuichi said suddenly and Koki looked up at him.

“You have a kind father as well.”

“But not as understanding as yours.”

“He gives you everything you need.”

“Material things, yes… but my freedom...” That moment, his tone turned sad. “Your dad, he lets you do what you want. He believes in you and what you can do. Unlike me, I lived under the orders of my father. I was never able to do anything freely.” Yuichi sighed and his pace slowed down as he continued, “I am the only child…  Ever since childhood, I was expected to take over my father’s place… but I want to walk my own path too.” Yuichi stopped. He got off the bike and sat beside Koki.

Koki looked at him and saw the darkness in his eyes. He wanted to comfort him but how?

Yuichi looked up to the sky and smiled sadly, “I want to be a chef… a world-class chef. I want to bring happiness to anyone who eats what I cooked. That is my dream. That is why I worked as an apprentice of every cook from the different restaurants and shops where I worked. Through that, I could gain knowledge about cooking. And when I’m earning for myself, I want to study culinary arts abroad and come back here as a successful chef.”

Koki found himself smiling at Yuichi’s determination and for the first time, felt something inside him flutter.

“How about you? What do you want?” Yuichi asked leaning close to his face.

Koki gulped and looked away. “I want to be Japan’s no.1 man.” He grinned and Yuichi laughed soon after.

“That’s too vague. You have to be more specific!” Yuichi exclaimed then giggled.

“I know. I have no idea how to start either… But actually, I just want to be influential, that way, I could do something to find my mom.”

Yuichi cocked an eyebrow. “Why? Is your Mom lost?”

Koki shook his head, “Not really. She left us years ago. It’s just that I miss her so much. I wanna know why she left us and if she still loves us.”

Yuichi moved a hand to stroke Koki by the shoulder. A simple move that surprised both him and the younger man but he continued anyway. “You’re still lucky because you were able to be with her for some time. Me, I never experienced having a mom to take me to school or to take care of me when I was sick. I was never able to hear her voice, nor feel the warmth of her touch. My mom died after giving birth to me. I have no memories of her at all.”

“I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have brought that up.” Koki bowed and apologized over and over.

“Daijobu. I know she’s watching over me anyway.” Yuichi smiled at him before standing on his feet, pulling Koki to stand next. “C’mon, we still have to make dinner.”

Koki breathed deeply and managed to smile back. “I’ll take the bike this time.” He announced and jumped on the bike quickly making Yuichi frown.

“That’s not gonna work again, I’m tired of walking with these bags at hand. If you’re not coming then I’ll leave you here.”

“Chotto…” Yuichi moved to pull an extra seat that Koki forgot was there then sat behind Koki. He gripped the hem of Koki’s shirt, “Okay, let’s go home.” He declared happily and Koki knew something was wrong with him with the joy he felt with what Yuichi referred as home.
