Bad Dogsitter

I am a bad dogsitter.

The dog in question is a lovely little beagle; she belongs to my daughter’s best friend. Puppy is staying the night at our house, and I am totally beside myself.

First. I am afraid of dogs. Not, like, deathly afraid. They make me anxious. My eldest spent a week in the hospital when he was a baby because of a dog bite. So now I ( Read more... )

If it makes you feel better, eating chocolate is still more likely to give her an upset tummy than kill her? My labrador once ate an entire box of chocolate-covered cherries off of the dining room table (where they were theoretically supposed to be out of his reach of course), wrappers and all. I think he puked, that was it. A dog that gets a chocolate snack every day though, yeah that dog will be in rough shape. But overall, dogs are a very durable animal.

She might be as anxious as you are, which would explain why she's toddling around after the person who's clearly in charge. Pet her if she wanders up to you. She'll whine from the door if she wants a walk, probably. Otherwise, she'll be looking for nap spots or trouble to get into, depending on her personality. :D

That's good to know about the chocolate, seriously. I don't make a habit of letting chocolate lay on the floor, but you never know what might have escaped a stocking at Christmas, and is now lying in wait for a poor, unsuspecting puppy who just wants some noms.

Now that a friend has informed me I'm making the dog more nervous by checking on her, I quit checking on her. Now she seems a lot happier! And nappier! :D

With the chocolate, it's the amount. They'd have to ingest A LOT of it before it would kill them. We had this problem once when my roomie took the dogs home with her for Christmas and they somehow got into like a dish of Hershey's Kisses. Like the other commenter said, they'll just get an upset stomach and might need to be taken to the emergency vet to get it out(or just given something to make them throw it back up) but otherwise, they'll be fine ( ... )

If you don't like dogs or are afraid of them, why did you take on the job of dogsitter?

Third. The dog we’re sitting is a very, very good dog, and my daughter wants a dog like you wouldn’t believe, so I say yes because I’m trying to chill about them.

When they have to go out, they start to nose graze, looking for the perfect spot, but only if they are not house trained. They can go a long time before they really have to go.
She's following you because you are the pack leader.
