So close to getting a bingo. If only you had a "He's just doing the hero's journey/All fantasy writers do it" or a "It's fantasy, it doesn't have to be realistic" box.
Heheee. I thought a reference to "homages" and a reference "there are no original ideas" might mean "it's the Hero's Journey" would become repetitive, but "it doesn't have to be realistic because it's fantasy" would have been good. I've gotten that one.
Well most of the points in the box are pretty true. I find it amazing that a whole site hating on Paolini exists. Is he great? Fuck no. Is he good? Not really. Is he decent? Probably. It's funny how he manages write better then the majority of people who post stories on here. However most of his metaphors are... odd and he seems fine with being predicatable. Which normally isn't bad, but it does get somewhat boring. Hate is born of ignorance. That said I would never generalise such a term. Now I'm going to look for a site hating on JK Rowling. Who is, in my opinion, the most overrated author of the decade. She is a good read, but not that good. Oh and the guy talking about fantasy and realism: you do realise that those two terms conflict with each other, don't you? I'm starting to think this site is filled with jealous, junior, authors. Not that I blame you, If could write an average novel and become a millionaire, I would do so. Would the other fellow please tell me why fantasy has to be realistic by our standards?
1. This isn't a "site hating on Paolini." It's a diversified literary criticism group that got its start based around criticism of Paolini's work. The group isn't perfect, but it's not about "hate
( ... )
Somewhat recently, a dude e-mailed me to attack me over the books and when I mentioned I was reading Inheritance only a day after it came out (in the context of "sooooo glad this is the last one"), he said "Ivy, Ivy, Ivy" condescendingly to open his letter, and wrapped it up with "Hmm, that book came out on the 8th and it's only the 9th" (or whatever it was) " . . . looks like SOMEONE's got a GUILTY PLEASURE."
GROSS.
Incidentally, I do understand that a lot of people in this community enjoy sporking, enjoy reading "so bad it's good," and enjoy being offended by terrible literature, but I actually legitimately hate it. I've deliberately avoided picking up Twilight and other books that this community has dumped on, because I already EXPECT them to suck. With Eragon, I didn't know better. :o
This just in, at least 50 people from around the world have been found to have committed what looks like mass suicide somehow related to The Inheritance Cycle by child prodigy Christopher Paolini. Bodies are still being found. The preliminary reports suggest "They were just jealous."
That would be interesting (Skyping with a bunch of antis, that is), but . . . what would be the impetus? It's not like we sit here getting constant hate mail.

Or maybe it's just interesting to play "how low can it go?" and mocking is the modern fine art. :P
