Andean ethnographers...

Anyone know of any good Andean ethnographers? I just returned from doing some archaeological fieldwork in Peru and have ABSOLUTELY decided that I want to study identity and ethnohistory in the Andes. Andean worldviews are very interesting, and I think a susbumed investigation on the commodification of culture (and culture tourism) would buttress ( Read more... )

Dr. Joseph Bastien is pretty awesome and well versed in Bolivian Andean culture. I don't think I would recommend him for graduate school, but only because the school, itself, sucks, not him. He would definitely be able to point you in a good direction for Andean ethnography, though.

I recommend Irene Silverblatt from Duke ... she has done immense amounts of fieldwork in Peru and written some amazing books. I think her interests are mainly geared toward colonization and state-building, as well as gender.

With what organization are you going to Ghana through?
Where are you going to be in Ghana?
I studied abroad there about five (!!!!! time flies) years ago and am also interested in South American culture and history.
I am getting my master's in education presently but hope to entroll in a doctoral program in anthro in the near future.
