Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Yesterday I went to have my haircut and decided to gossip with my stylist, Melissa. I've never really bonded with her before but I decided that I should solidify our relationship after six years together with only an occassional infidelity, once when travelling in France and I was seduced by the glamour of Toni & ( Read more... )

how about the "women" who "just want to have fun"? :-) I'm sure there are at least a few intelligent, well-educated women who want to want to experience the full spectrum of life without having to answer to a man at the end of the day.

I am sure there are. The difference is in the idea of Fun. Hitting a bar every night is different from many other pursuits of well-educated women.

i am tempted to think that it's less about having fun and more of an almost evolutionary reaction to longer life spans and overpopulation.

the reasons for marrying young and having lots of kids are just irrelevant these days, in my opinion.

good observation!

anyways, if you want to see young (uder 30!) mothers you visit either Queens or SoHo. only the very rich or the very poor can afford to have kids.

From what I've heard from most anthropologists these days is that both Americans and Europeans are not reproducing fast enough to support their population numbers, and in fact, the only reason why our population is staying constant is due to influx of immigrants and their reproduction rates. Overpopulation is a bit of a myth to be quite honest.

i would agree, from an economic standpoint, that overpopulation may be a myth, but in terms of environmental resources, housing, and things of that sort, overpopulation is very much a problem. maybe not so much when you look at individual nations, but on a global scale i would have a hard time saying that it's a myth.

I don't really feel like discussing the topic right now, but I'm sure there will be others who do. so, for their sake, I'll identify some preconceptions I see in this essay:

1. "Adulthood" begins when you settle down romantically, not when you start a career and live independently of support systems that existed in childhood.

2. Women WILL eventually want to start having children.

3. "Recent thirty-year-old divorcees" just want to have fun.

4. Women who wait to gain more experience before marrying are doing so because they just want to have fun.

It seems that this article is wrought with personal fear about future stability.

My background: Not married, not planning to get married until I am more settled in my career and find a good man with similar goals.

Given the prevalence of articles I've been reading recently that posit that because of various things in Western culture including our comparative wealth, culture of instant-gratification and obsession with "youth", we're not reaching post-adolescence until well in our thirties, this "just wanna have fun" attitude seems absolutely in keeping with the theory ( ... )

can I get some references to these articles? they sound fascinating, and I've been meaning to read up more on marriage and the family.

It'll take me a bit to pull them (I moved last week and haven't unpacked), but just so you know, the articles were about marriage and family - they were about some of the effects of what living in a disposable society has done to our youth.

Wow, that hasn't been my experience at all. Perhaps it's peculiar to NY?
