It all sounds wonderful! You were so lucky with the weather. I remember touring in England and southern Scotland in August 2002 (we were there for the wedding of our son and English daughter in law). We encountered blue skies, warm weather, and about 3 days of serious rain in 6 weeks. Looks like you cracked it as well. Lovely pics, and had a giggle over imagined Kennedy in a dress.
We've been to the other extreme. Skiing in the alpine area in the north east of our state (Victoria). Blizzard conditions much of the time which meant plenty of snow, but not too pleasant. A few glorious "blue sky" skiing days, though, and definite improvement of skills (we're in our late 50s / early 60s and only took it up 6 seasons ago)at the cost of only a few bruises and one or two minor, non disabling strains.
Back to the coal face tomorrow. Like you I'm trying no to think about it till the last minute!
Thanks for sharing.

Wow skiing in blizzard conditions?! That sounds very adventurous! Well done you guys! I tried skiing a couple of times about ten years but I value my knees too much to make a habit of it ;) You have to be very determined to ski in Scotland, the conditions are invariably atrocious!

Hope first day back at work's not too trying.

*sighs and stares at pretty pictures*

The museum looks really fascinating! Especially the ship model and reconstruction. And you most certainly did do a lot of reading! Very impressive. =)

I must make a note of Wigtown for when I eventually do go to Europe. I can spend hours in a bookstore so I'll probably have to camp there overnight!

I've got more pics of the museum and the ship which I'll try and post sometime soon. It was a fascinating place. I knew next to nothing about John Paul Jones before visiting.

Well you know, two weeks in a van without electricity, tv or internet, there's not much else you can do other then read! Perfect really ;)

The place you really need to go to is Hay-on-Wye which is a book town on a grand scale. I haven't been to Hay but I suspect Wigtown is titchy in comparison!

I've heard of Hay-on-Way from a magazine article I read several years ago. Sounds awesome!

I'm curious. How's the scale of things in terms of driving in the UK? How long does a journey from the northern coast of Scotland to, say, Plymouth, take?

According to googlemaps it would take 13 hours to drive from one end of the UK to the other! Realistically though if you wanted to do it without killing yourself you'd be looking at three or four days. Some of the roads in the Highlands are pretty awful and there are no motorways north of the central belt of Scotland. It's worth the effort to get up north though :)

Awesome pictures! Everything is so green! (Except for the sea, obviously.)

You could tell we were almost in England because all the kids on the campsites were playing cricket!
*lol* What do they play in Scotland? Here it would be football.

On top of all that I also saw some of the clearest dark skies I have seen for years and some breathtaking shooting stars.
The Perseid shower?? It was overcast here on those nights. :(
At least it happens every year.

The Perseid shower??
Ooh I never thought about that! Perhaps it was!

Stars including the Dioscuri I hope ! Lovely pictures - and the fine skies -reminds me of those rare moments when we get uninterrupted sunshine in west Wales too - the quality of the light.
And as for Archie in a dress - see upcoming post about the Time travelling Indy..( hopefully I will get it written tomorrow)
Feel like I ahve been away for longer than you - but that is in the nature of the beast as it were

I know they were there but alas I couldn't identify them. It was enough to know they were up there :)

I'm not surprised. Hope you're home now. *hugs nodbear*

Am home - weather has been much as Horatio is demosntrating here (!)
and am trying to catch up - too slowly for my liking but about as fast as a zonked out brain will permit !

Most of what I hoped toa achieve didn't happen and the we veered on to some lee shores of late life mental health that would need all the combined skills of Pellew and George Thomson father and son, to navigate>.
anyway more of that on journal if anywhere

re Castor and Pollux - you find Orion and then look north westward - or start from the Plough and follow the line of the four main stars ..we'll have a go sometime for real !

I'd put up with any amount of rain to see Horatio looking like that! He does do wet so very well.

I'm surprised you even have the energy to type!

Re lee shores, I'm sure you have done your very, very best. *more hugs*

I know I was looking in the right area but I couldn't with all honesty say I was able to pinpoint the heavenly twins. So yes we must have a go for real soon :)
