Here's what I don't get.

Why is bread sold in such big loaves?  I like bread.  I like toast and I like sandwiches.  But I never, ever eat more than half a loaf of bread before it gets moldy.

Can't the nice bread makers just sell me half a loaf?  Or...I don't know.  There should be some way around this that I'm not seeing.  Anyone?

As someone else suggested, fridge bread spares the spoiling at least a week if not more. I heartily recommend it, and have been keeping mine that way since I left home (where the presence of a gaggle of siblings meant no bread lasted long enough to ever spoil).

Hahahaha, yes, that was how it was at my home. Though it was less a gaggle and more just my little brother who ate enough for hundreds. I don't know how I never thought of the fridge before. But I'll be trying it now.

Storing bread in the fridge keeps it from spoiling too quickly. Freezing is good for long term. Sara Lee bread doesn't care what you do to it, it'll survive a nuclear holocaust. (Seriously, it's been sitting on my counter for two weeks now...no mold)

Hee, sadly I'm REALLY picky about bread and don't like Sara Lee. But I think the combination of small loaf pans, freezing, and storing in the fridge will be my winner.

Freeze half the loaf? That's all I can think of. Bread freezes fine as long as it's stored airtight.

What they said. Or you could buy it from a bakery instead of a supermarket. Bakeries that bake their own bread are more likely to sell you half loaves.

We don't have bakeries around here that sell bread like that. :S

I think there might be one downtown, but nothing in East Lansing. All the bakeries are very 'artisan whole-grain' which is awesome, but expensive and rarely what I need.
