For days, he'd danced around Lily in a careful collection of steps designed not to cause trouble or bring down her wrath again. She spent most of her time at work, so he only had to worry about when she was home. Mostly, though, she ignored him unless they happened to be in the same room, and while he wanted to be around her, he thought it best not to push his luck just yet. James walked around a lot, but for the moment did his absolute best to avoid anything and anyone that might get him in more trouble; this, unfortunately, included Sirius and Remus. He made sure to always be home before Lily was, so she could see he wanted to be with and around her.

One or twice, he passed by Harry's home, and thought about knocking, trying to talk to his son. Every time he walked away without doing so, James cursed inwardly. He could face down Voldemort in a certain death situation, but not his own son. He always returned home without speaking to Harry.

Finally, though, he decided he had to concentrate on one person at a time. Lily, he had to live with. Or, rather, he wanted to continue living with, and therefore it behooved them both to make amends, or so he thought. At least they could get to a point where they could open a dialog and begin talking?

So at last, he spent one day out shopping for Operation Make Wife Happy, gathering the supplies he needed to open Lily up to having a conversation with him rather than ignoring his presence. Once home, he laid out the items and took out a cookbook to read the instructions carefully. Frowning, James realized this cooking business was a bit more complicated than he always thought. He had to try, though, because he just couldn't continue like this. Sleeping on the couch was one thing; not even talking to his wife almost killed him.

He battled the chicken for almost an hour before he managed to get it basted with the honey and mustard sauce, find a pan big enough for it, and get it in the oven. Then, he realized, he didn't have room in said oven for the vegetables. Well, there'd be plenty of time, right? While he waited on that, he went about setting the table with place mats and the nice dinnerware Lily saved for special occasions. Then he thought twice about that, as he wasn't sure if she'd be angry or not for him using it, so he replaced it with slightly less expensive dinnerware.

Then he set about trying to make the dessert, but that turned out more complicated than he imagined as well, and he got distracted by the chicken in the oven, still not finished, and trying to decide what to do about the vegetable, if he could put them in the pan with the chicken without burning them or himself, and he spilled strawberry syrup all over the counters with a curse.

By the time Lily got home, she'd find a harried James trying to clean up the kitchen, with uncooked vegetables and a half-cooked chicken. Not to mention, strawberry syrup and chocolate mousse smeared on his face and in his hair.
