12th Random Encounter

Jul 30, 2011 22:56

[Red Mage got another important regain back in the mail about a week ago, and now he's finally ready to implement the next part of his plan to escape Mayfield.  Which is to say, volunteering for and completing every stupid random quest the rest of the town is willing to give him.  He doesn't have his dice yet back, but with the Rite of Stat Swap ( Read more... )

quest xp is the best xp, trolling spazzy, trolling black mage, invoking godmod rights, trolling red mage too

[Neal gives them a funny look, reads the letter, and gives them an even funnier look.]

... you're kidding, right?

Not at all. We're professionals through and through.

[... right. Well, maybe they can be useful, even if they're almost certainly insane.]

Alright, what's your price?

Rewards typically come in the form of monetary compensation or a quest item, depending on the service performed.

Okay, hold on a minute.

[Mika is kind of irritated that this is the reason why she limped over to the door. This is not important enough a thing for her to be in more pain.]

First of all, I only see half a party, and you two hardly seem Warriors-of-Light material. Secondly, I didn't think adventurers usually got desperate enough to go door-to-door.

[She glances past Red Mage to the paper bag'd mage behind him.] What, is the hospital not giving you enough chances to fatally maim the patients this week?

[Her pained glare switches back to the red mage, and she flaps the note at him.]

Thirdly, any self-respecting gamer doesn't whore themselves out for quests! That's the sign of a noob who doesn't know which end of the spear to stab the bats with, or is too lazy to bother trying. It's embarrassing and makes the rest of us look bad! Did you even try looking for potential NPC encounters? Message boards? Anything?

[She snorts, her ears flicking back against her scalp as she leans heavily against her cane and the doorframe. Still, she ( ... )

[She makes a low grumbling sound in her throat, and rubs her forehead and eyes.]

I never thought I'd run into a rules lawyer in the middle of the Twilight Zone.

All right, all right! [Still looking pained, she holds up a hand.] Leaving the fact that you actually think that experience points are a thing that you can gather in the real world aside, shut it for a second.

Did it ever occur to you that you might have simply missed opportunities over the phone? I seemed to have been hearing plenty of public grievances lately and it might be common for people to ask about the sort of things you could take on as quests. I can't believe I'm actually encouraging this...

Congratulations! Extra points for the gentleman with the unfortunate fetish for crimson! How could you tell? [After affecting surprise she lowers her hands again, leaning against the doorframe and trying hard not to wince openly in pain. The thick sarcasm was dropped from her voice, and her ears folded back against her scalp.I seem to recall my arrival was unfortunately ( ... )

Oh, they're real. Realer than you know. But I'm not surprised that you think of them in that way. My own training took years of almost completely uninterrupted study of the very functioning of the universe itself. It takes quite a bit of focus to be able to perceive the numbers that govern existence. Oddly, most of them have to do with combat and magic systems, as it turns out.

As for missed opportunities, yes, I'll admit that there may have been some that slipped by the wayside. An unfortunate consequence of having to attend to this lawyering business the town has seen fit to give me. Although even that hasn't been all bad. It's a steady stream of income, and my Profession:Barrister skill could use a few more ranks anyway.

You're telling me to send you halfway around the world -- town, on some crazy-ass job to fetch me random junk? Not the other way around...?

[Everything is wonderful.

Nothing hurts.

[Over at 847 Goldberg Street, Balin answers the door while dressed in his AFS physical training uniform. Don't worry-unlike Black Mage, Balin washes his uniform daily!]

[Speaking of which, he has no idea who these two people are. He's heard plenty of warning about Black Mage, just not anything as to what he looks like.]

[So, Balin's listening to Red Mage's pitch, reads the note ... and looks incredulous.]

You serious? You offerin'a play delivery boy an' bounty hunter for'a whole town?

[Psst. Balin. You used to do this all the time in the AFS.]

[Nevertheless ... Gears are turning in Balin's head. He might have a potential use for this service!]

As long as there's information and experience to be gained along the way, no journey is truly pointless.
