12th Random Encounter

Jul 30, 2011 22:56

[Red Mage got another important regain back in the mail about a week ago, and now he's finally ready to implement the next part of his plan to escape Mayfield.  Which is to say, volunteering for and completing every stupid random quest the rest of the town is willing to give him.  He doesn't have his dice yet back, but with the Rite of Stat Swap ( Read more... )

quest xp is the best xp, trolling spazzy, trolling black mage, invoking godmod rights, trolling red mage too

[She makes a low grumbling sound in her throat, and rubs her forehead and eyes.]

I never thought I'd run into a rules lawyer in the middle of the Twilight Zone.

All right, all right! [Still looking pained, she holds up a hand.] Leaving the fact that you actually think that experience points are a thing that you can gather in the real world aside, shut it for a second.

Did it ever occur to you that you might have simply missed opportunities over the phone? I seemed to have been hearing plenty of public grievances lately and it might be common for people to ask about the sort of things you could take on as quests. I can't believe I'm actually encouraging this...

Congratulations! Extra points for the gentleman with the unfortunate fetish for crimson! How could you tell? [After affecting surprise she lowers her hands again, leaning against the doorframe and trying hard not to wince openly in pain. The thick sarcasm was dropped from her voice, and her ears folded back against her scalp.]

I seem to recall my arrival was unfortunately punctuated by the sounds of my screaming, you must've missed it somehow. Had your nose in your D & D rulebook?

[Okay so maybe there was a tiny bit of sarcasm left.]

Little more than two weeks. Your friend would know, I have the misfortune to be his coworker at the hospital.

Oh, they're real. Realer than you know. But I'm not surprised that you think of them in that way. My own training took years of almost completely uninterrupted study of the very functioning of the universe itself. It takes quite a bit of focus to be able to perceive the numbers that govern existence. Oddly, most of them have to do with combat and magic systems, as it turns out.

As for missed opportunities, yes, I'll admit that there may have been some that slipped by the wayside. An unfortunate consequence of having to attend to this lawyering business the town has seen fit to give me. Although even that hasn't been all bad. It's a steady stream of income, and my Profession:Barrister skill could use a few more ranks anyway.

Shush! [Her hand came up as his nattering began to make her head swim uncomfortably. The medication left her dizzy even when they weren't dulling the pain completely.]

I believe you, but that is not how it works where I'm from.

"Some" you say. More like enough to have taken care of several lower levels if you'd been able to catch them in time. But if you're here as a lawyer that shouldn't be too bad.

All right. Since I haven't got much longer before I collapse onto the lawn, do you want a job or are you going to stand here arguing about minor nuances of the system with me all afternoon? Because if it's the latter I am going to slam this door in your face and go collapse on something softer than the sidewalk.

The flaw in that logic is your assumption that I am low level to begin with. But I digress. Yes, the reason I am standing here to begin with is to receive a quest. May I presume that you have one to give?

If you want to tell me all about it later I'll be happy to listen. [Or will she? Mika might just be saying it to get him off the subject.]

I do, maybe.

[She has to close her eyes and regain her bearings because the world really is beginning to spin, with uncomfortable grey spots at the edge of her vision when her eyes open again.]

There's two different levels of this quest. If you manage to find what I'm looking for, I might open up later sidequests. What do you think?

A branching, multi-tiered quest? Challenge accepted!

All right, first thing I'll be wanting is art paper. Nothing too big, but I'm looking for a pad of paper with a wire spiral if you can get one. Also I'm looking for a couple different types of graphite pencil. HB and 2B grade, if you can find them. Last, I'll want a gum eraser. If you can find all three of these, I'll be really appreciative.

Think you can handle all of that?

Got it. Is there a deadline on this quest? I've accepted several others already, you see, and time management is an important part of any adventuring career.

Sooner would be better than later, but it's nothing time-critical. It's just something to keep me sane while I recover.

Well then, consider it as good as done!

[She cocks her head, her ears flicking forward.]

Thanks. Want me to discuss payment with you after we see what you can find?

I assume that means the potential reward has multiple potential levels of usefulness depending on the quality of materials I am able to procure.

Possibly, or rather that's the plan. At the moment the most I can offer is a home-cooked meal, since I don't have much money. If you have any ideas, I'd be happy to discuss them with you.

A home-cooked meal, hmm? That might raise some of my statistics...

Hopefully in a good way. I'm fairly confident in my skills.

So, does that sound like a fair trade, then?

Yes, that sounds perfectly agreeable.
