I'm sorry, but is that Cesare Borgia undergoing emotional angst on my television screen? Cesare Borgia? The same Cesare Borgia that wrote his name in words of blood across the entire peninsula during his father's reign? That Cesare Borgia ( Read more... )

My rage lives to serve! Actually, I generally find them funny myself, especially some weeks later. I don't think we were lj friends when I was watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand last year, so for some real entertainment, go check out my posts on the subject. Warning: abuse of capslock follows.

In case you have missed this facet of my personality, I am a teensy bit obsessed with historical accuracy.

Was it the evocation of Tolkien's mythos (because I generally swear by the Valar or Varda), or the preceding rant about Hollywood being overly enamored of physically impossible feats of swordplay?

I'm just too picky about these things -- I really disliked Rome, and I didn't even try The Tudors because I knew I'd hate it. I expect a very high level of accuracy from historical fiction, books and tv and movies, and just because I'm continually disappointed (at least from the tv and movies side of things) doesn't mean I ever expect any less. And as much as I end up loving tiny details, they never make up for the big errors, for me -- I mean, the LotR movies were filled with brilliant and amazing tiny details, and I still hate them with the fire of a thousand suns.

I'll give The Borgias one more shot, but -- argh, Cesare Borgia was truly evil, and seeing him as a conflicted, angsty young man is just dropping me out of the story. How am I supposed to get wrapped up in the story if every two minutes I'm going, "BUT YOU'RE A MASS MURDERER AND RAPIST, WHY ARE YOU WANDERING AROUND WITH DOE EYES AND A PERMANENT 'THE WORLD HATES ME' EXPRESSION?" My sympathy = is not going to be given to Cesare Borgia.
